First showers tomorrow, with general rain expected.
The passage of an active cold front will also bring the first significant snowfall of the season to the high peaks of the Pyrenees.
The calm of this start to the week will not last. We are on the verge of a significant change in the weather, the first signs of which will appear on Wednesday, with increased cloud cover and the first scattered showers, especially along the coast and pre-coastal areas. It will be in the early hours and morning of Thursday when an active cold front will move in full force, bringing widespread rain, some downpours, and the first significant snowfall of autumn in the higher elevations of the Pyrenees. Meteocat has already issued alerts for heavy rain in most regions for Thursday, and Civil Protection has activated the Inuncat flood plan.
All of this will take place in a distinctly autumnal atmosphere, although minimum temperatures will generally rise in the coming days due to increased cloud cover. Therefore, the cold will be more moderate in the early morning, after some frosts were recorded this Tuesday in Pyrenean valleys and in some inland areas. The lowest minimum temperatures recorded were -4°C in Das (Cerdanya), -1.5°C in Prades (Baix Camp), and -1°C in Guixers-Valls (Solsonès).
Wednesday: busier weather
Cloud cover will increase this Wednesday. In the morning, the clouds will be more significant along the coast and in the pre-coastal areas, where they will bring the first scattered showers or rain. These are most likely along the central coast, while morning fog will return inland. In the afternoon, cloud cover will become more widespread, with overcast skies across much of the coast, pre-coastal areas, and Central Catalonia. Showers will spread sporadically in these areas, and in the afternoon they may reach more areas, especially the Pre-Pyrenees and the southern slopes of the Pyrenees. The southerly wind will strengthen in the afternoon and will be particularly noticeable at higher elevations, in the Ponent region, in the southern mountains, and on the Costa Brava. Minimum temperatures will rise due to the cloud cover, with a more moderate morning chill. Maximum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, with many reaching between 17 and 22 °C. This Wednesday at 2:19 p.m. the peak of November's supermoon, the biggest of the year, will arrive. With increased cloud cover expected, it will be best to enjoy the phenomenon on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Widespread rain on Thursday
The passage of an active cold front will bring widespread rain during the early hours and morning of Thursday. The precipitation will affect all regions and will cross the entire country from west to east, with downpours that could be locally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms. The first significant and widespread snowfall will also occur in the higher elevations of the Pyrenees, especially above 2,000 meters. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the Alt Pirineu, with between 10 and 20 centimeters of new snow.
From midday Thursday, sunshine and wind will prevail in many areas, but some scattered showers will linger in the northeast and the Pyrenees. Between Friday and Saturday, the weather will remain unsettled, with showers expected again. It's unclear whether a Mediterranean low-pressure system will develop and directly affect us, which will determine the amount of rain expected in the final part of the week. This uncertain situation will need to be monitored closely. All of this will be accompanied by an even more autumnal feel.
