Dew, strong winds, snow in the Pyrenees and colder temperatures to start the weekend
Saturday is a busy day and it's early autumn, but the weather will be radically different on Sunday.
BarcelonaCalm prevailed this Friday after Thursday's heavy rains. However, a new wave of showers swept across the country on Friday night and into the early hours of Friday morning, leaving up to 24 liters per square meter in Constantí and 22 liters per square meter in Tarragona. The change in weather is accompanied by strong northerly winds in several regions, more snow in the Pyrenees, and a colder, more autumnal feel. In contrast, the weekend will end dramatically differently, with the return of calm and sunshine. Maximum temperatures will rise on Sunday, but will remain relatively mild.
Saturday: Busy weather
On Saturday morning, the front will finally cross over, bringing showers that will circulate from west to east and will generally be light and scattered, with the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms, especially in the northeast. From midday onwards, the rain will move out to sea, but precipitation will continue on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, with the snow level dropping from 2,000 m to 1,700 m. Up to 20 cm or more of new snow is possible at the highest elevations in this area. The afternoon will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy in the rest of Catalonia, but without rain.
However, caution is advised due to the strong northerly winds, which will be gusty. The mistral and tramontana winds will be felt across much of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community, where there will be heavy swells. The wind will be particularly strong and could exceed 100 km/h in the Ebro Valley, the Tarragona region, the Costa Brava, the Balearic Islands, and the Pyrenees peaks. The possibility of a torb (storm-like phenomenon) in the highest areas of the Pyrenees cannot be ruled out. Meteocat has issued a strong wind warning for some regions.
Caution is also advised in the Balearic Islands, as strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day. Very adverse weather is forecast for the archipelago, especially Mallorca and Menorca. Aemet (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency) has issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy rain, rough seas, and strong winds in the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile, sunshine will prevail across much of the Valencian Community, although with a mistral wind.
All this with a clear drop in temperatures, making it generally colder, a feeling accentuated in many cases by the wind. Highs will range between 12 and 17 °C, lower in mountainous areas, with sub-zero temperatures throughout the day in the higher reaches of the Pyrenees. Typical late autumn cold.
Sunday: Calm returns
The unsettled weather will suddenly disappear on Sunday, and a sunny and calm day awaits us. A radical change in the weather will make for a pleasant and productive day. The wind will subside considerably, weakening and becoming concentrated in the Ebro valley and the northern Empordà region. It will be cooler in the morning, so you'll need to dress warmly, but the highs will rise, making it more pleasant at midday, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 20 °C. This stable weather will continue into the beginning of next week, with an increase in temperature inversions and morning fog.
