This Sunday, the weather will be radically different from yesterday. The weather will be markedly calmer, with sunshine and calm across most of the country. Only afternoon clouds will gather in mountain areas, leaving a few scattered, minor showers in some parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and nearby areas. After yesterday's rain and cool breeze, this morning the chill is evident everywhere. The minimum temperature has even dropped below 20°C along much of the coast. Inland, a sweater is essential early in the morning, and in mountain areas, a jacket is needed. But throughout the day, temperatures will rise and become warmer, and this rise in temperatures will be the norm for next week.

All this follows the heavy downpours that swept across the country yesterday from south and west to north and east, with many incidents. The showers were very irregular in intensity and quantity, with, for example, virtually no rain falling along the northern coast of Barcelona and parts of the Costa Brava. The storms were especially torrential and lasted longer in regions such as Bages, Anoia, Baix and Alt Penedès, and parts of Terres de l'Ebre. In these areas, there were many records of between 50 and 100 l/m². A lot of rain in a short period of time, causing significant flooding and flash flooding of rivers and streams, such as the Cardener River as it passes through Súria (Bages), which swept away vehicles. All this accompanied strong winds and some hail (you'll find the report on this episode at the end of this report). The pocket of cold air crossed us full force, and when it collided with the accumulated heat and humidity, this small DANA caused these strong storms and downpours throughout the country.

Sunday: calm returns

The weather will be much calmer on the last day of the weekend. It will be a day marked by calm and sunshine in most regions. Tomorrow will bring some fog or low clouds, especially in inland valleys. In the afternoon, dark clouds will again gather in mountainous areas, but will only leave a few patchy, light showers in parts of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. Some showers are not ruled out in the inland mountains of the northeast, especially between the Transversal mountain range and the Montseny mountain range, as well as in Els Ports. In any case, these would be occasional, while storms with a bit more impact could arrive later in the Lleida Pyrenees.

Small nuances in a context of calm, nothing like the strong storms of Saturday. Minimum temperatures have dropped sharply, and the night has been very cool and allowed good sleep everywhere. Maximum temperatures will rise everywhere, with mild warmth and many temperatures between 26°C and 32°C. The increase could be very pronounced in inland areas, with temperatures exceeding 5°C compared to Saturday. The north wind will blow moderately in the early morning and early morning in the northern Empordà region.

Little water and more heat next week

No further significant rain or storms are expected over the next week. After all, we're in July, a typically dry month in our country. The sun will dominate, with only a few minor afternoon showers in the north of the country. Temperatures will rise, especially starting midweek, when the heat will be more intense and temperatures will more easily exceed 35°C in the warmer inland areas.

Shower Summary

Severe storms swept across the country on Saturday, with torrential downpours that in some cases left more than 50 l/m². Particularly notable were the regions of Central Catalonia, Baix and Alt Penedès, and parts of the Ebro, where these figures were exceeded, even reaching 100 l/m² locally, and in some cases more than 40 l/m² fell in just half an hour. Even in Els Ports, 68 l/m² were recorded in just 30 minutes, an extraordinary intensity. All this was accompanied by strong winds, some hail, and numerous lightning strikes, more than 11,000 across the country.

So much rain in such a short period of time caused many incidents, such as flooding and swollen rivers that in some cases turned streets into veritable rivers. One of the images of the day was the Cardener River, full and carrying cars as it flowed through Súria, in Bages. There were also some very heavy downpours in parts of the Pre-Pyrenees and Ponent. However, between the northern coast of Barcelona and many parts of the Costa Brava, as well as in the northern regions of Lleida, there was little rain.

The Canaletes station (Alt Penedès) recorded 102 l/m². It was already the wettest day in its 23 years of records. These are the most important records and images from Saturday:

  • 102 l/m²: Canaletas
  • 100 l/m²: Els Ports
  • 93 l/m²: Sant Martí Sarroca
  • 89 l/m²: Ódena
  • 88 l/m²: Font-rubí
  • 82 l/m²: Gandesa
  • 78 l/m²: Inglesola – Tornabous
  • 77 l/m²: San Salvador de Guardiola
  • 75 l/m²: Vilafranca del Penedès
  • 64 l/m²: El Vendrell
