Last showers and storms until tonight: radical change on Sunday

The cold air pocket is going away and in the next few hours calm will take over.

Heavy downpours swept across the country this Saturday, from south and west to north and east, causing many incidents. They have already swept across much of the country, and the sun even came out during the afternoon in several regions. The storm is now subsiding, but scattered showers will remain overnight and into the early evening, with the possibility of intense but isolated thunderstorms in the northern half of the coast and in Roussillon, where they will eventually move on completely. The showers have been very irregular in intensity and quantity, with, for example, virtually no rain falling along the northern coast of Barcelona and parts of the Costa Brava. Meteocat is still maintaining the northeastern regions on alert for heavy rain.

The storms have been particularly torrential and have lasted longer in regions such as Bages, Anoia, Baix and Alt Penedès, and parts of Terres de l'Ebre. In these areas, many records have reached between 50 and 100 l/m². This has caused significant flooding and flash flooding of rivers and streams, such as the Cardener River as it passes through Súria (Bages), which swept away cars. This has been accompanied by strong winds and some hail (you will find the report on this episode at the end of this report).

The pocket of cold air has crossed us fully, and colliding with the accumulated heat and humidity, this small DANA has caused strong storms and downpours across the country. This Sunday, everything will be fine, and the weather will be radically different. It will be fairly sunny and calm in most parts of the country. Only afternoon clouds will grow in mountain areas, leaving some scattered, minor showers in some parts of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. The night will be cooler, but highs will rise, awaiting a calm week with increasingly intense heat.

Sunday: calm returns

The weather will be much calmer on the last day of the weekend. It will be a day marked by calm and sunshine in most regions. In the morning, there will be some fog or low clouds, especially in inland valleys. In the afternoon, dark clouds will again grow in mountainous areas, but will only leave a few patchy, light showers in parts of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. Some are not ruled out in the inland mountains of the northeast, especially between the Transversal mountain range and Montseny. In any case, they would be anecdotal.

Small nuances in a context of calm, nothing like the strong storms of Saturday. Minimum temperatures will drop, and the night will be cooler and generally conducive to sleeping. Only slightly tropical lows—above 20°C—will be recorded near the sea. Maximum temperatures will rise everywhere, and there will be heat without extremes, with many temperatures between 26°C and 32°C. The increase could be very pronounced in inland areas, with temperatures exceeding 5°C compared to Saturday. The north wind will blow moderately in the early morning and early morning in the northern Empordà region.

Little water and more heat next week

No further significant rain or storms are expected over the next week. After all, we're in July, a typically dry month in our country. The sun will dominate, with only a few minor afternoon showers in the north of the country. Temperatures will rise, especially starting midweek, when the heat will be more intense and temperatures will more easily exceed 35°C in the warmer inland areas.

Shower Summary

Severe storms have swept across the country with torrential downpours, in some cases exceeding 50 l/m². Particularly notable are the regions of Central Catalonia, Baix and Alt Penedès, and parts of the Ebro, where these figures have been exceeded, even reaching 100 l/m² locally, and in some cases, more than 40 l/m² have fallen in just half an hour. All this was accompanied by strong winds and some hail.

So much water falling in such a short period of time has caused many incidents, such as flooding and swollen rivers and streams, which have turned streets into veritable rivers in some cases. One of the images of the day is the Cardener River, full and carrying cars as it passes through Súria, in Bages. There have also been some very heavy downpours, more occasionally, in parts of the Pre-Pyrenees and the West. However, between the northern coast of Barcelona and many points on the Costa Brava, as well as in the northern regions of Lleida, there has been little rain.

The Canaletes station (Alt Penedès) has recorded 102 l/m². It is already the wettest day in its 23 years of data. These are the most important records and images of the day.

  • 102 l/m²: Canaletas
  • 100 l/m²: Ports
  • 93 l/m²: Sant Martí Sarroca
  • 89 l/m²: Ódena
  • 88 l/m²: Font-rubí
  • 82 l/m²: Gandesa
  • 78 l/m²: Inglesola – Tornabous
  • 77 l/m²: San Salvador de Guardiola
  • 75 l/m²: Vilafranca del Penedès
  • 64 l/m²: Vendrell
