Barcelona"We inform you that today Àlex Santos concludes his professional career at Barça as Director of Communications." With this internal message, the Barcelona club announced to its employees on Wednesday that one of the key figures in Joan Laporta's second term at Camp Nou is no longer holding one of the most important positions on the management committee. Santos had held the position since spring 2021 after having been the head of communications for the We love Barça candidacy and that Gabriel Martínez, at that time dircom from Banc Sabadell, decided not to leave in order to begin coordinating Barça's communications.

Four years and a bit after that sequence, at the beginning of this summer, Martínez did join Barça to handle all communications related to the first team. In this context, Sergi Nogueras and Xavier Guarte were removed from the first team and reassigned to the corporate area and the women's team, respectively. Jordi Nomdedéu, who until then had been in futsal, moved to the first team to work with Martínez. Although it was internally felt that all these changes could weaken Santos, the former Efe news agency journalist kept the position. However, as the weeks went by, he ended up leaving a very sensitive professional position that requires patience, assertiveness, language skills, and a good rapport with all the communicators who cover Barça's day-to-day operations. The contract between the parties has been resolved by agreement, as is customary in these ranks.

Election year on the horizon

The next few days will be very important for the department to restructure itself ahead of a few months in which it will need to expertly communicate the phased return to a Camp Nou still under construction and awaiting reopening permits. It will also be necessary to be pedagogical in the economic sphere ahead of this fall's general assembly, where figures with asterisks will be announced, with a revenue allocation affected by the delay in stadium construction. All of this in a pre-election environment with pre-candidates pulling strings to combat laissez-faire at the polls. In principle, the elections should be held in the spring.
