The ride-hailing platform Uber, the ride-hailing service (RV), has launched Uber Green in Barcelona, a 100% electric vehicle travel service that allows for emission-free travel at no additional cost to the user. With this, the technology company seeks to "contribute to improving mobility in Barcelona," a key city for Uber worldwide. And an important step toward that goal is ensuring that both residents and visitors have access to 100% sustainable mobility.

With this new development, the Catalan capital becomes the fifth city in Spain—after Madrid, Malaga, Murcia, and Seville—to offer this sustainable mobility option. In this first phase of the launch, Barcelona already has around 100 electric vehicles (EVs) active in the app, including the new Cupra Tavascan. Of the latter, 30 have been added to the city's VTC fleet for the time being thanks to a strategic agreement with Seat, an initiative in line with Uber's global commitment to become a zero-emission platform on a global scale by 2040 and, at the same time, achieve 100% electric trips in Europe by 2020.

Since June, Uber Green has been available to users with electric vehicles through the company's app for the same price as UberX. The service is available in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, and users simply select the Uber Green option when requesting a ride.

Contributing to a more sustainable future: Uber's global commitment to electrification

Uber continues working to become the most comprehensive urban mobility app in Barcelona, offering multimodal, sustainable, and accessible solutions. Along these lines, the launch of Uber Green is another step in the company's global vision, which is committed to a profound transformation of the VTC sector as a key driver for decarbonizing urban transport.

The electrification of the VTC sector is key to moving toward more sustainable cities. Due to its volume of activity and fleet renewal capacity, the VTC sector not only generates a direct and accelerated impact on reducing emissions, but also creates new economic opportunities and increases local employment.

To enable the transition to 100% electric vehicles, Uber has invested $800 million globally to support drivers. Currently, thanks to the technology company's commitment, the platform already has more than 200,000 electric vehicle drivers worldwide and offers service in more than 120 cities, where passengers can request an electric ride at no additional cost.

The company details in the ARA that "one in four passengers who have taken their first trip in an electric vehicle has done so through Uber." In Madrid, since the launch of Uber Green in 2022, the electric vehicle fleet has multiplied by eight and is expected to reach more than 1,000 active vehicles in the city center alone by 2025. Malaga has had Uber's electric service since spring of this year, and since then, the number of vehicles on the platform has tripled. In Murcia and Seville, the service launched in May and June, respectively, and they continue to expand their fleet.

Uber's strategic agreement with Seat

As part of the launch of Uber Green, the San Francisco-based company has signed a strategic agreement with Seat to add 30 Cupra Tavascan vehicles to the city's electric fleet. This collaboration promotes the transition to EVs supported by a local manufacturer, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, the MOVES III Plan, and the Electric Vehicle Promotion Plan 2025-2030.

The European Green Deal is a package of measures that, in reference to mobility, aims to introduce cleaner, healthier, and cheaper means of public and private transport to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050. The MOVES III Plan is a program that offers subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles that seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a sustainable transport model. And finally, the Electric Vehicle Promotion Plan aims to mobilize more than €1.4 billion by 2030 to accelerate the implementation of EVs in Catalonia and thus achieve 90% electrification of the Generalitat's fleet.

This is how Uber contributes to a green transition and, at the same time, helps move toward a more sustainable future.
