BarcelonaTwo inmates from the special closed regime department (Dert) —the isolation area— of Brians 2 prison attempted to escape early Sunday morning from the center. Penitentiary sources explained to ARA that the two inmates spent between two and three hours in the attic of this department after leaving a cell by dismantling the light panel, which gives access to the technical floor of the department, where the electrical installation and water system are located. The inmates were able to make this move without any alarm being triggered, the same sources add. For their part, the Department of Justice highlighted that the center's officials thwarted the escape attempt.

According to prison sources, staff at this prison in Sant Esteve Sesrovires became aware of the escape attempt due to an alert from a third inmate. This inmate reported that his cell was flooding and that his cellmate was not there. Therefore, staff expected to find only one inmate, not two, in the technical area.

"The quick and coordinated action of the prison staff made it possible to detect the incident immediately, activate security protocols, and locate the inmates within minutes, preventing them from completing their escape," assures the ministry. Once the two prisoners were located, the officers detained them and transferred them back to the Dert, where Justice explains that "the corresponding security measures have been applied in accordance with the established protocols." According to prison sources, both have been immobilized.

It has also been decided, as is usually done after an escape attempt, to transfer the inmates to other prison centers. The Department of Justice has highlighted that the entire intervention took place without any serious incidents and that normality was quickly restored at the center. It has "valued the professionalism, response capacity, and coordination of the center's officers" to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the penitentiary center.
