BarcelonaTwo inmates from the special closed-regime department (Dert) —the isolation area— of Brians 2 prison attempted to escape from the center early Sunday morning. Penitentiary sources explained to el ARA that the two inmates spent between two and three hours in the attic duct of this department after leaving a cell by dismantling the light fixture, which gives access to the technical floor of the department, where the electrical and water system installation is located. The inmates were able to make this move without any alarm being triggered, the same sources add. For its part, the Department of Justice highlighted that the center's officials thwarted the escape attempt.

According to prison sources, workers at this prison in Sant Esteve Sesrovires noticed the escape attempt due to an alert from a third inmate. He warned that his cell was being flooded and that his cellmate was not there. Therefore, the workers expected to find only one inmate in the technical area, not two.

"The rapid and coordinated action of the prison staff has made it possible to detect the incident immediately, activate security protocols, and locate the inmates in a few minutes, preventing them from completing the escape," assures the ministry. Once the two prisoners were located, the officers detained them and transferred them back to the Dert, where Justice explains that "the corresponding security measures have been applied in accordance with the established protocols." According to prison sources, both have been immobilized.

It has also been decided, as is usually done after an escape attempt, to transfer the individuals to other penitentiary centers. The Department of Justice has highlighted that the entire intervention took place without any serious incidents and that normality was quickly restored at the center. It has "valued the professionalism, responsiveness, and coordination of the center's officials," to guarantee the security and proper functioning of the penitentiary center.
