BarcelonaA first-aid kit is a must-have in your vacation suitcase. Antoni Torres, pharmacist and president of the Federation of Pharmacy Associations of Catalonia (Fefac), explains to ARA which essential medications you should take to ensure a pleasant summer and that any inconvenience during the holidays is just a scare. However, the expert warns that it's very important to check the expiration date on all medications you take on your trip to ensure they're working as intended and that you don't suffer any poisoning.

Medications for chronically ill patients

People with a chronic illness should be especially careful when preparing their first-aid kit for vacation, as they take essential daily medications that are only available with a prescription. Therefore, Torres recommends always carrying them in their carry-on bag in case of any luggage problems. Thus, a person with diabetes or hypertension should always carry the medications they need, and if their large suitcase is lost, they are guaranteed treatment and won't have to change their vacation for health reasons.

Medications to prevent burns and bites

If your destination is a tropical location, a beach, or a very hot country, it's essential to bring sunscreen and insect repellent. This will help you avoid burns and bites, some of which can also cause infections from diseases like dengue fever or West Nile virus. Torres adds that it's important to bring medication in case you get burned or bitten, which relieves the pain and speeds recovery.

Medication in case of an accident

When hiking in the mountains or on a long hike, there's a risk of minor falls or accidents. In these cases, Torres recommends carrying disinfectant, small scissors, gauze, and adhesive tape to treat wounds and scrapes and prevent infection. However, the expert warns that if this kit doesn't resolve the accident, it's necessary to see a doctor to avoid serious complications.

Pain Relief Medications

A classic travel kit that shouldn't be missing is painkillers to soothe a headache, menstrual cramps, or a bout of fever. Torres also suggests including a small thermometer, an anti-diarrheal medication, and a hydration solution, which are sachets you empty into water and drink when you have diarrhea to prevent dehydration.

These are the essential medications, but the expert emphasizes that each one has its own health characteristics, and if, for example, you get motion sickness or anxiety when flying, you should include medications that you know work well for you in these situations.
