Tension at a demonstration called by Vox in Tarragona
The protest, whose slogan was "No to Islamization, no to mass immigration", drew about sixty people.
TarragonaThe popular Tarragona neighborhood of Bonavista is experiencing an attempted provocation by Vox this afternoon. The far-right party has called for a protest under the sloganNo to Islamization, no to mass immigrationThe demonstration, which only drew about sixty people, aimed to reach the site where the neighborhood's Islamic community wants to relocate its mosque. There, however, in addition to a police cordon, some 250 anti-fascists awaited them. Tensions rose when the far-right protesters began to clash. We are the ones who are afraid"," called an eleven-year-old Muslim boy who was pushed by an ultra-right-wing protester. The time of the demonstration, 6:45 p.m., coincided with the end of the Muslim community's fast on Wednesday and one day before the end of Ramadan. Anticipating the disturbances that the racist rally could provoke, anti-fascist and migrant support groups, such as the Anti-Racist Network, the Association of African Women, and the Invisible Association, had asked the City Council to urge the Generalitat (Catalan government) not to grant permission for this Vox rally. They had also requested that buses be brought in from other places to ensure a sufficient turnout. However, it met with limited success. People shouted from their windows: "He has no shame, he's here getting paid. We don't want dogs," yelled a neighbor.
