A person died on Sunday after being caught in an avalanche while skiing off-piste in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The victim was skiing at the Cerler ski resort when they were caught in the snow. According to sources from the Civil Guard in Huesca, ski resort staff alerted the Aragon emergency services (112) around 2 p.m. that two small avalanches had occurred in a ravine in the area and that a person was trapped. Ski resort staff and members of the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) from Benasque went to the scene and rescued the victim, who was unconscious. However, the victim ultimately died. This is the fifth person in less than a month to have died buried by an avalanche in the Aragonese Pyrenees, after three people died on December 29 while ski touring on the west face of Tablato peak. High avalanche risk

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has maintained a yellow avalanche warning in the Aragonese Pyrenees this Sunday, while in Catalonia, Civil Protection has activated the Allaucat plan, which is currently in its pre-alert phase. The avalanche risk for Sunday is rated at 4 out of 5 in the Ribagorçana-Vall Fosca area. Emergency services have also warned that the avalanche risk in the rest of the mountain areas is 3 out of 5.
