Key meeting for the management of migrant minors from Ceuta with the Spanish government, the communities, and without Vox

This Thursday, the political debate will revolve around unaccompanied migrant minors in Ceuta. The Ministry of Youth and Childhood and the autonomous communities are meeting to address their situation, although the only official item on the agenda will be the approval of 25 million euros in extraordinary funds to reinforce the autonomous community's resources. The PP vetoed addressing the situation of children in a previous meeting, but the ministry intends to raise it nonetheless.

The ministries held by Vox after the pacts with the Popular Party (Aragon, Castile and León, and Extremadura) will not attend the meeting and have already warned that they will "challenge" the files of the minors they receive. The PP, meanwhile, is balancing between the pressure from the far-right and compliance with the law, which obliges communities to accept the distribution of children.

Be that as it may, sources from the Ministry of Childhood indicate that it is still far from putting a figure on the table for the minors who would arrive on the Peninsula (first they all have to be registered and family reunification with the country of origin is to be prioritized).

In any case, sources from the ministry led by Sira Rego assure that at the meeting, the inclusion of the debate on the care of migrant minors will be proposed at the beginning of the meeting and will have to be voted on. The objective, they specified, is to add a broad item on all issues related to childhood, including the proposal to transfer 500 girls from Ceuta to the Peninsula. As the Spanish government already explained, the idea is to prioritize the transfer of the most vulnerable profiles, especially girls, but by reaching direct agreements with private entities for their reception. The proposal is that the government of the autonomous city maintains guardianship of the minors and that custody is transferred to the social entities that manage reception centers. Thus, the competencies would remain in the hands of Ceuta, even though the Ceuta government has asked the State to assume them in the face of collapse.
