MadridThe PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) has targeted the model implemented by the PP's autonomous regions for promoting private universities. A couple of months ago, the Spanish government launched an initiative aimed at limiting the proliferation of what it calls "university bars," located mainly in the Community of Madrid under the leadership of Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The Socialists are now seeking to deepen their "commitment to public universities" by addressing a loophole in both the decree and the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU), which is the possibility of academic institutions paying companies to secure internship places for their students. The plurinational majority in Congress has approved a PSOE bill prohibiting this.

This is a first step toward trying to "put an end to the possibility of purchasing internship places at professional centers," in the words of Socialist MP Roberto García Morís. García Morís insisted that the PP and Vox have attacked this bill, which is just beginning its parliamentary process. Regional MP Josep Pagès expressed that Carles Puigdemont's party dislikes the initiative because it entails "more bureaucracy, rigidity, and homogeneity." Opening the door to introducing Catalan-specific modifications to the LOSU has led to its prey being considered for the regional vote. "The law has many other loopholes," said Estrems, who announced that ERC will present amendments. "Since we're opening laws, let's open them up to do things properly and not just change a couple of paragraphs," he reflected.
