Dwelling

A squatted block in central Girona has been evicted for the third time.

The large device has evacuated eight floors of the building, but the families have already re-entered.

GironaA large police operation evicted a squatted block on Ronda Ferran Puig in Girona, in the city center, on Wednesday. The building, located at numbers 13 and 15, next to the train tracks, has serious structural problems and has been occupied by several families for months. The doors are boarded up, the windows on the ground floors of the former shops are painted white, and a fence under the balconies prevents debris from falling into the street. This Wednesday's eviction is the third in this same building, following those carried out in March and May.

The operation began at 8:00 a.m. and brought together officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police), the Spanish police, and the municipal police. Personnel from the basic supply services also attended the building, the power was cut off, and traffic was restricted on a section of the street. The initial intention of the operation was to evict 18 of the block's apartments, but ultimately it was only 8.

As the families were evacuated, workers from a company destroyed the apartments and utilities to make them uninhabitable, thus preventing them from being reoccupied once the police operation was lifted. However, as occurred in previous attempts to evict the residents, once the operation was completed, there was already movement among the families to move back in. The residents of the blog, who have not caused any conflict in the neighborhood, assert that they had not received any official notification of the eviction and regret that the City Council has not responded to two letters recently sent requesting alternative housing. For its part, the council has announced that it will hold a meeting with a group of residents this Wednesday to address the situation.

The operation has proceeded without major incidents, as those affected have not put up any resistance. However, inside one of the homes, officers found marijuana, leading to the arrest of at least two people.

The building, which has serious structural deficiencies, has an outstanding demolition order that has not been executed and was occupied at the end of July 2024. The first major police operation to evict its inhabitants took place on March 20, 2025, when three homes were evicted. On May 29, a second, larger operation took place, resulting in seven apartments being evacuated. However, in all cases, after the interventions, the occupants have re-entered the building despite attempts to make it uninhabitable. Similarly, on the other side of the train tracks, on Tomàs Mieres Street, there is another building in the same situation, also abandoned, in poor condition, and awaiting demolition, where squatters also live.
