Education publishes the summer assignments of teachers one month before last year's course
Eight out of ten civil servants have obtained the position they had requested as their first option
BarcelonaCatalan teachers already know which school or institute they will be working in next academic year. This Tuesday, the Department of Education published the definitive destinations for teaching staff for the 2026-2027 academic year, known as the summer assignments. The publication of the position each teacher and professor will fill has been made one month earlier than previously done and after last year there was a major upheaval when a "deliberate" error by one of the department's employees forced the entire process to be repeated and its results to be delayed.
According to the Department of Education, in this year's assignments, eight out of ten (87.88%) tenured teachers – approximately 25,000 professionals – have secured their first-choice position, and 93.25% have been assigned one of their top five preferred options. Regarding interim teachers – who are not obligated to participate in assignments – 70.27% of teachers and professors have been allocated one of the first five options they requested.
On the other hand, in the territorial areas with more educational centers, the percentage of teachers assigned to their first choice is higher. In Barcelonès it is 91.10%; in Baix Llobregat, 89.97%; and in Barcelona city, 89.63%.
Destinations before the end of June
After last year's mess, the Government has boasted that this year the teaching destinations have been published before the end of June (the last day of the month). According to a statement, the early publication, which allows teachers to go on holiday knowing where they will work next year, is thanks to the schedule of the rest of the processes, and they give as an example the fact that there has been no state transfer competition this year. In fact, at the end of the year, Education also announced that there will finally be no regional transfer competition this year, as initially planned, "to prioritize the stability of the collective." A decision that did not please teachers or unions.
The Government has defended that the publication of the awards during the month of June "was a commitment made by the councilor Esther Niubó last year" to give "foresight and stability" to the educational system, and has celebrated that "this way teachers already know their destination for the next academic year before going on vacation". "It is a very important milestone, which allows for greater foresight and gives stability to the system", said Niubó, who insisted that all of this allows "the 2026-2027 academic year to begin to be prepared almost a month earlier than was usually done".
