With the arrival of warmer weather, feet seek freedom. High temperatures encourage us to take off our shoes and opt for lightweight footwear. But not everything is fine. The apparent comfort of flip-flops hides risks that many people are unaware of. Experts from the College of Podiatrists of Catalonia warn that this type of footwear, so common during the summer months, can become the silent enemy of our feet.

The problem lies in their design: generally flat, lacking adequate support, and with only one thin heel. This type of structure forces the toes to constantly overexert themselves to keep the flip-flop in place, which can lead to conditions such as heel or forefoot pain. However, this doesn't mean they should never be worn. Flip-flops have their place: the pool, the beach, or very short journeys.

Given the risks, podiatrists agree that the best footwear for summer is one that combines coolness, comfort, and good support. It's not about giving up lightness or breathability, but choosing a model that has a firm, wide, and flexible sole. It will also include a footbed that stabilizes the heel and a support system that keeps the foot in place.

Choosing flip-flops may seem like an innocent decision. But it isn't. In a summer full of hikes, getaways, or long urban walks, having the right footwear is much more than a matter of style: it's a measure of health. Your feet and body will thank you for it.
