Zapata, who took office just over six months ago, explained that she is still diagnosing the situation of Barcelona's nightlife. Vella, Eixample, Sant Martí and Sarrià Sant Gervasi– and that "there are many other districts where this leisure offering could be offered." While she did not specify how many new nightclubs she believes are missing in the city, the commissioner did emphasize that young people are demanding "local entertainment" from the city council and not having to take a car or public transport to go out dancing.
Beyond the new nightclubs, in the interview, Zapata insisted that there are many people in the city who are not interested in traditional entertainment and are looking for other options. Last May, in fact, the commissioner presented her roadmap for this term, which aims to diversify the city's current nightlife offerings and includes proposals such as opening municipal facilities such as sports centers or community centers at night to offer alternatives to the options more closely tied to bars and nightclubs.
Zapata also emphasized the need to redefine nighttime public transportation to facilitate access to the most popular entertainment areas and thus avoid street gatherings. Along these lines, she suggested the possibility of implementing a shuttle bus system that runs from the busiest nightlife spots to other parts of the city.
