"We continue to improve people's lives": Sánchez boasts about government action and announces 2.2 billion more for dependency
The measure, which the council of ministers plans to approve this Tuesday, means that the State will contribute 50% of the investment
Barcelona2,218 billion extra euros is the amount that the Council of Ministers plans to approve this Tuesday to strengthen the dependency system, one of the pillars of the welfare state, but highly criticized for its slowness and scarcity of resources 20 years after the approval of the law, which was already born underfunded. With this increase, part of a structural reform of the system, the Spanish government intends to expand the amounts it transfers to the autonomous governments, which should allow for the doubling of aid received by citizens with a higher level of coverage. With this extra contribution, the amount that the Spanish government allocates to dependency will reach 7.2 billion by the year 2027, which will allow the contribution to reach 50% and thus fulfill the executive's commitment for this legislature. In fact, the law of 2006 already indicated that the State and the communities had to share the costs of services and benefits halfway, but unlike health and education, beneficiaries of dependency have to pay a part.
decreasing, from 32% in 2008 to 16.5% in 2021"This government took on the task of rebuilding and strengthening a system that for years was practically dismantled by the austerity policies of the PP. Between 2012 and 2020, the State's contribution remained stagnant at historic lows. Since then, we have tripled state investment in dependency and have gone from just over 1.3 billion to almost 3.8 billion in 2025," said Sánchez, who added that, with the new contribution, "one of the most important transformations of the system since its creation will be completed".
The Spanish government's intention is that citizens with a recognized degree II will have double the aid —going from 130 euros per month to 260 euros—, while the contribution will be even greater for those with a degree III, the maximum —they increase by 128%, going from 290 euros per month to 660—. Regarding degree I (moderate dependency, they increase by 18%, going from 76 to 80 euros per month. According to Sánchez, with this extraordinary contribution his government seeks to achieve three objectives: "further reduce waiting lists, guarantee more and better care, and dignify the conditions of caregivers".
, in which it commits to paying dependency benefits within 60 days.
decreasing, from 32% in 2008 to 16.5% in 2021, that is to say half, while the Government's investment and the beneficiaries' co-payment have increased. Citizens with a recognized degree of dependency contribute up to 17%, almost triple what they did 15 years ago. Furthermore, with almost 81,000 people, Catalonia leads the waiting lists to receive care, 30% of the total in the State.
Precisely, the Government has begun to apply a shock plan, the Cura Plan, in which it undertakes to pay dependency benefits within 60 days.
