The legislature in the State

BarcelonaThe day after the leader of Junts in Congress, Miriam Nogueras, completely closed the door to facilitating a PP and Vox government, the party's secretary general, Jordi Turull, also ruled out investing the Spanish president and socialist leader: "We will not invest Pedro Sánchez, because we have been very badly burned by this person," he stated in an interview with TV3. In fact, he stressed that the Brussels pact, the seed of the last legislature in the State, "was an agreement in historical terms, but it was one thing after another and, always finding excuses, everything kept getting delayed."

The Junts leader reviewed the distrust created between Sánchez and Junts with the failure to fulfill the agreed-upon commitments, which led to the breaking of the pact with the state executive last October. Thus, he even referred to the proposal launched by Carles Puigdemont's party to avoid elections: that Sánchez should step aside: "So that he would not accelerate the possible access of the right and the far-right to the government of the State, [it was proposed] that the PSOE appoint another person with whom we could talk who would deserve more credibility from us," he said.

In this sense, he accused Sánchez of prioritizing his electoral and personal interests, because he considers that "he is more concerned with himself" than anything else. He also did not miss the opportunity to lament that Sánchez "plays day by day" and makes policies "to look good," with a method of "governing by decree." The core of the enormous distance between Junts and Sánchez is that the Spanish president "has not delivered," in Turull's opinion.

Outside the governability of the State

With this announcement, Junts would be out of the state governance equation, unless there were a plot twist. It must be taken into account that in the last legislative term, former president Carles Puigdemont already assured that they would not reach an agreement with Sánchez. Precisely, it was in an interview with ARA in mid-July 2023 that the former head of the Government was very clear: "Sánchez will not be president with Junts' votes. Paying in advance to a guy from whom you wouldn't even buy a second-hand car is a risk sport," he exclaimed at the time.

But the opportunity opened up with the election result of July 23 last year, when Junts obtained the key to the investiture and the Brussels agreement was woven, based on the amnesty law for the 'Procés', which was to serve as a starting point for the resolution of the political conflict. The international mediation in Switzerland with the table between socialists and Junts members ended up failing, and of the rest of the conditions they did not achieve any relevant one that would allow them to carry forward the legislative term with a dynamic of agreements with the PSOE.
