The Pope, in 22 speeches

The pontiff does not bite his tongue on the apostolic journey to Madrid, Catalonia and the Canary Islands

12/06/2026

Special envoy to the Canary Islands (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)Pope Leo XIV concluded his apostolic journey to the Spanish state this Friday, leaving behind many political messages. The head of the Catholic Church, with more than 1.4 billion faithful worldwide according to data from the Holy See, has been increasing his geopolitical impact for months. What has he emphasized in this week's 22 interventions?

The Sánchez factor

More than a month and a half before the apostolic journey, the far-right party Vox already feared that the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, would use the Pope "to launder himself" and, in fact, had initiated outreach to the ecclesiastical hierarchy since the end of April, as reported by ARA, to "lower tensions"with the institution, after weeks of clashes over immigration. But it is precisely on this issue that the pontiff has validated the state executive's humanitarian work from the Canary Islands.

However, it is true that at Congress he also explained the Church's doctrine on issues such as abortion and euthanasia and defended "human dignity" from the beginning of life to natural death – something that Vox also defends and, partially, the PP–. But it has not been the central theme. In fact, during the trip he has not criticized feminist theses or gender laws, and this shows that it is not a priority for the Church at the moment either, while Pope Francis had publicly criticized "gender ideology" several times. Leo XIV, however, has addressed "violence against women" and the scourge of "femicides" from the Lluís Companys Stadium.

Economy and rights

The current pontiff, a continuation of Pope Francis's criticism of wild capitalism, opted to insist on the social message in Madrid before business associations and unions and demanded that employers treat workers ""with dignity". He also reflected on the risks of artificial intelligence and its use so that it does not harm the world of work and does not deviate from ethics, and mentioned the issue of language, also closely linked to social networks. The use of words also reached Montserrat and Congress, against "hurtful" words and political "polarization".

Before the bishops, in the Spanish capital, he urged them to fight against the "plague" of pederasty in the Church and, before the young people, he asked for social commitment, not just prayer, in a warning against hypocrisy.

In Madrid and Catalonia, he has also repeatedly used the words unity and concord, referring to the Church and society. But at the Sagrada Família, he avoided this unity referring to Spain and eliminated all initially planned references. He opted for a great use of Catalan and quickly integrated into the country, recognizing its cultural personality. A pope uncomfortable for the far-right, sensitive to realities like Catalonia, and with a marked social accent.
