Sánchez will hold an act with Mamdani next week in New York
The government also communicates an official visit by Macron to the State on September 29 and 30
MadridAlthough all polls point to a victory for the PP in the upcoming elections –except for the CIS–, Pedro Sánchez does not consider it lost and will fight the battle for the left at a state level, but also globally. In Moncloa, they are convinced that the re-edition of the progressive coalition goes beyond Spain and stands in contrast to the far-right wave that is winning all over Europe. That is why next week's meeting in New York is relevant: as reported by El País and confirmed by sources from Moncloa to ARA, the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, will share an event with the left-wing American mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who has become the counterweight to Donald Trump in the United States.
It will be on September 23rd with the title Building an economy for the majority at the mayor's official residence and is organized by the Global Progress Foundation. For Moncloa, it is an important meeting because it is in line with the event that the PSOE already organized in Barcelona to join forces with other progressive forces from all continents, and even more so considering that Sánchez has wanted to position himself as the nemesis of Trump. In this final stretch of the term, the PSOE wants to emphasize more social issues –preparing state budgets with high public investment–, just as Mamdani is emphasizing in his speech the material issues of the working and middle classes to face Trump's discourse.
Also to be read in the same vein, of global battle, is the article that this Monday the vice president and head of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, writes with his Brazilian counterpart, Dario Durigan, on progressive economic policy in El País. The Lula da Silva government is one of Sánchez's great allies on the other side of the Atlantic.
Socialist sources ask to broaden the focus and see what is happening in Europe and Latin America before going to vote: the advance of the far-right in a good part of European governments –like the recent victory in Saxony-Anhalt– and also the turn to the right in countries like Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile or Daniel Noboa's Ecuador. For this reason, they have also followed with attention the cliffhanger count in Sweden in which the left has prevailed: "Sweden has seen its rights curtailed and has said never again. This is also a warning to Spanish compatriots. Whoever tries the right and the far-right does not want to try it again", sentenced the PSOE spokesperson, Montse Mínguez, in this Monday's press conference, who celebrated the recovery of the left and the retreat of the ultras who until now influenced the conservative government.
The official visit with Macron
On the other hand, the Spanish government has also officially announced an official visit by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to the State, on September 29 and 30. It will be at the highest level and comes at a moment of weakness for both presidents: they are two European Union heavyweights facing a rise of the right and the far-right at the end of their term. Furthermore, it coincides with the signing of the friendship treaty between both countries, pending ratification due to the PP's veto in the Cortes.
