At the end of November, one of the most anticipated trials of recent years is scheduled to begin. The Pujol family, accused of organized crime, money laundering, tax evasion, and document forgery, will appear before a court. It remains to be seen, however, whether former president Jordi Pujol will attend the trial in person. This Friday, according to reports... The Country And as confirmed by ARA, the former president of Catalonia, who held the position for 23 years, has asked the National Court to assess his health to decide whether he can attend the trial. Pujol is requesting that the court consider whether, at 95 years old, he is capable of fulfilling the role of a defense. If so, the former president also requests that the court consider allowing him to follow—and participate in—the trial remotely, rather than attend in person. To enable the court to assess his situation, the defense has submitted three medical reports on his health. In-person attendance only on the first day

A few days ago, the ARA already had The lawyers for the former president plan to request that he appear via videoconference. He would do so from the City of Justice to avoid the logistical hassle of being in Madrid for several days, and also to avoid the media scrutiny surrounding the trial of his family. Pujol wants to be physically present only on the first day of the trial. In any case, it is the court that will have to make this decision.

In this trial, the prosecution is seeking a nine-year prison sentence for Pujol, and for his children, sentences ranging from eight to twenty-nine years. Jordi Pujol Ferrusola faces almost three decades in prison. The State Attorney's Office, on the other hand, is not requesting any prison time for the former president and is seeking 25 years for his eldest son. The investigation began twelve years ago, in 2012, when Victoria Álvarez, former partner of Jordi Pujol Ferrusola, filed a complaint explaining that the family regularly transferred money to Andorra. So far, the investigation has indicated that family members allegedly took advantage of their privileged position to accumulate wealth directly linked to income derived from corrupt activities. In any case, it will be the court that determines the extent to which each family member committed a crime.
