Jaume Giró tears up his Junts membership card

BarcelonaNew departure from Junts: Jaume Giró tears up his party membership card. The former Minister of Economy has decided to resign as a member after he left all his positions in the party's executive and also his seat as a deputy a year ago, according to what Nació Digital reported and the ARA confirmed. Sources from Junts consulted by this newspaper explain that Giró communicated his decision to President Carles Puigdemont a few days ago, although they have not wanted to explain the reasons. Giró's departure is in addition to that of the former secretary of the Parliament's bureau, Eusebi Campdepadrós, who, as the ARA reported this Monday, also resigned as a member on July 27, after the amnesty had been applied to him, although he had been distanced from the party for months.

Giró's estrangement from the party leadership has been going on for a long time. It was in September 2025 when the former minister left the seat as a deputy he had obtained in the 2024 elections and left the executive of the formation led by Puigdemont, alleging disagreements with the political strategy. In the statement announcing that resignation, Giró already explained that the "orientations" of the Junts formation did not coincide with his "way of understanding politics". In fact, consulted sources assure that Giró has made the decision to leave the party by reaffirming his estrangement from the party's political line. A distance that has become increasingly evident in recent months: at the beginning of the year he openly asked Junts to vote in favor of the new regional financing model, and in May, although his name had been mentioned in the polls to run as Junts' candidate for mayor of Barcelona, Giró ruled it out.

The former deputy entered the political front line in 2021, when Pere Aragonès appointed him Minister of Economy. From that position, the former La Caixa executive managed to approve the 2022 budgets on time – with the support of Comuns – and finalized those for 2023, but Junts' departure from the coalition government with ERC, in October 2022, placed him on the losing side of an internal consultation: he advocated for continuing in the Catalan executive. Located in the more pragmatic sector of the party, his departure began to brew from then on.

Giró's departure is added to that of the former first secretary of the Parliament's bureau, Eusebi Campdepadrós. In this case, sources from Junts have specified the reason: the lawyer wanted to close his political chapter. Campdepadrós had been the head of the list for Tarragona in the 2017 elections, served as first secretary of the bureau – a position from which he participated in the admission for processing of motions for resolution on self-determination, which earned him a charge of disobedience – and between 2021 and 2022 he was secretary for the Administration of Justice of Aragonès's government until Junts left the executive.
