Taylor Swift celebrates a massive wedding in all aspects (except in grace)

BarcelonaThe wedding of Taylor Swift with Travis Kelce reminds me of the case of the typical choni who wins the lottery and, instead of changing habits, opening their mind and looking for new references – even if it's just to try... – does the same thing but on a large scale. If before she went to Stradivarius and bought polyurethane boots that peel on their own for her closet, now that she's gotten rich, what she does is go back to buy the same boots but in all colors. Because for her, resources imply quantity, not quality.

Since the wedding party of the artist and the American football player began on Friday afternoon in New York, all the information that has been leaked are figures. 1,000 guests, a truckload of donuts, 26 million dollars in charity donations, 130 police officers guarding the area, part of Manhattan blocked off, that she has built a castle... This all the time. One of the most famous people in the world is marrying someone with a fortune that could approach 2 billion dollars with a successful athlete who is also rich and has the world at his feet, and none of the data we know is anything special. No magic, no nuance of mystery, zero ambition to create a minimal narrative...

If it weren't because we have infinitely more serious problems, I would say that I find it disheartening. It perfectly exemplifies all of this that they have paid three million dollars to rent Madison Square Garden. Yes, a sports arena. Before the musical star's wedding began, a media outlet pointed out – as if it were an originality or a success... – that it was the third wedding that had been held in the entire history of this sports palace. Well, ask yourself why no one rents that place to get married...

It is regrettable that, being able to choose any place in the world because you can afford it and your thousand guests can afford the travel, you end up getting married in a stadium surrounded by stands in the middle of Manhattan because, since it has a roof and is in the middle of New York, it is the most practical. Their mentality is the suicide of illusion. But don't look for this anywhere else because no one will tell you. In these times of lack of intellectually stimulating role models, everyone has found it to be perfectly fine. "Massive!", some current opinion leaders will have exclaimed. My mind cannot resist comparing it to the very suggestive wedding that Dua Lipa and Callum Turner starred in four days ago in Sicily and, honestly, the comparisons are terrible. One is huge and the other is charming. There lies the difference. For the first, only money is needed, and for the second, taste.

But if they were so basic in organizational matters, things inside didn't improve much. After the comedian Adam Sandler officiated a wedding ceremony –Page Six reported that the couple already arrived married at the show–, a dinner followed by a themed party inspired by Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. I'm breaking out in a cold sweat. Award for originality. Surely we'll soon know how many tons of flowers were used to disguise the lack of ambition in this idea. Fortunately, the newlyweds had the presence of Paul McCartney among the guests, who made a surprise appearance to perform the Beatles classic I wanna hold your hand. A privilege for this to happen at your wedding. That's very true. Is it possible that after this truly historic moment – perhaps after midnight, when it was already 4th of July– they started handing out the Krispy Kreme donut truck? Maximum depression.

Inside, the very famous guest list also stood out. There were a thousand. The reason, as she explained some time ago, is that she didn't want to argue with anyone by leaving them out of the invitation. She preferred to get married surrounded by people she doesn't care about than to make an emotionally careful selection. Finally, the concentration of famous faces at the wedding has been much higher than at some red carpets that are held throughout the year. We know they were there because we caught them entering, as the couple has issued an order banning mobile phones – and some media outlets claim they also made them sign a confidentiality agreement... – and no one has posted any photos of anything related to the link, nor have they said anything. Some of the personalities intercepted have been Zoë Kravitz, Selena Gomez, singer Fergie, Ed Sheeran, actors Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant, Dakota Johnson, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, director Steven Spielberg, model Gigi Hadid with her partner, actor Bradley Cooper, and many of Kelce's teammates at the Kansas City Chiefs. Camila Cabello and actor Taylor Lautner are also among the attendee lists circulating.

It had gone viral in the preceding weeks that Swift didn't invite everyone with a plus-one. To some she only invited them alone. Not to all. There has been arbitrariness. Seen in perspective, it is possible that the star did not want some of her invaluable exes to appear at Madison Square Garden on the day of her party. For example, the current boyfriend and fiancé of her good friend Zoë Kravitz, who is Harry Styles, to whom she dedicated the song Style. Since in her rise to fame Swift has so abused the tactic of having famous partners – in fact, she has continued to build media attention with this practice even when she herself was already the most famous – perhaps she had to look for some formula to self-protect from her entire roster of ex-partners.

Not 'looks'

Despite the significant investment and the enormous media capacity of the bride and groom and all their guests, it must be said that the wedding has not been dazzling either for the legacy of styles it has left us. At least those we have been able to see. The truth is that the wealthy people who attended have flaunted a capacity fashion equal or similar to zero. Nothing surprising. Nothing that someone with minimal stylistic ambition thinks they can replicate at a wedding they have this summer. The bride and groom, by the way, were both dressed by Dior, which has been a new confirmation that they have full pockets. Apart from that, nothing else to say.

Some media outlets have dubbed Swift's wedding the wedding of the year and others the royal wedding of America. In any case, I hope they are wrong. And if not, the portrait of the moment the star system is living is depressing. Having said all that, long live the bride and groom and long live their marriage. I have no doubt that it will last, as both are one hundred percent career-oriented and being married relieves them of extra pressure from the media who insist on this issue. Furthermore, the relationship was facilitated by her mother, who arranged for them to meet because she sensed that this boy was what her daughter was interested in.
