Nacho Duato attacks Rosalía for wearing a tutu: "You're making a fool of yourself"
The choreographer says that it "hurts" him that the singer "makes fun of classical dance"
BarcelonaThe choreographer and dancer Nacho Duato has harshly criticized Rosalía for using pointe shoes and a tutu during her "Lux" tour show. Duato posted a video on his Instagram account which he later deleted, but which other users managed to capture. The choreographer analyzed technical details of Rosalía's show and said, for example: "This tutu is not a tutu, it's a table full of skirts." Duato also railed against the artist's interpretation in relation to ballet pointe shoes: "She doesn't know how to rise onto pointe because she has it all turned inward. When she does an arabesque it looks like she's kicking the dancer. Her arms are left each one in its own direction," complained the choreographer.
The video also makes it clear that Rosalía has not taken into account the technical demands of the discipline. "To be a dancer you have to spend eight years, six hours a day, doing pointe work, at the barre, and attending classes. I see this lady doing what I and my dancers do, which is so difficult... and she goes on stage looking so fresh, puts on her pointe shoes and does a passed inside totally horrible. I know she doesn't want to be a dancer, but all this hurts me," Duato underlines. In the video, he also addresses the singer directly: "Look, Rosalía, get off those pointe shoes once and for all, take off your tutu. You're making a fool of yourself. As a dancer, it hurts me that you're making fun of classical dance and opera.
Duato's criticism has gained strength due to the artist's prestige in the world of classical dance: the Valencian choreographer directed the National Dance Company for 20 years, was the artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and has traveled the world with works such as Carmen, Eugene Onegin, Rust and Darkness blanca. But to lift her musical show, Rosalía also surrounded herself with top-level artists of the different disciplines. The Catalan singer collaborated with two big names in contemporary dance, the Greek Dimitris Papaioannou, the American Charm La'Donna and the French company La Horde.
