Vox, that Latin dictionary...

The President of the Generalitat must launch, set in motion, whatever you want to call it, a round of talks to also launch, set in motion, whatever you want to call it, a national pact for education. As part of the pact—and the issue is not minor—classrooms will be air-conditioned within a period of five years. This will give us a new distraction, which will consist of worrying about climate change, complaining about colds due to temperature changes, killing students who do not close the doors, et cetera.

Regarding the pact, naturally, Vox has labeled the Government as "sectarian" and has said that they will not participate: "Their model is totally contradictory to ours; really, we would just be wasting our time there," said Joan Garriga.

The structure of this sentence would not be entirely genuine or correct. Garriga uses a subject (“their model”), a copulative verb (“is”), an adverb (“totally”), and an attribute that describes the subject (“contradictory”), but then there is the complement (“to ours”). The adjective “contradictory” should perhaps go with another preposition: “with”. In Spanish, the same. I would have said “their model is totally contrary to ours” or “their model is totally contradictory with ours”. In both cases, I would eliminate the adverb “totally”, which is not necessary if we are talking about a contrary or contradictory model.

I say this because Vox, despite being opposed to linguistic immersion, have campaigned in the language of Mossèn Cinto and Guardiola in some areas of the interior of Catalonia (I do not want to think, God forbid, that it is so as not to be overshadowed by Aliança Catalana). In any case, this understandable and slight linguistic error is not specific to the Catalan language and would be the same error in the Spanish language. In fact, Catalan and Spanish, like Galician, French, or Italian, are languages with the same root, Latin, which have very similar grammatical structures; that is why, for a Catalan speaker it is so simple to speak Spanish, and for a Spanish speaker, to speak Catalan. Speaking more than one language, in these times of AI, is an act of cerebral gymnastics.
