The Mossos according to Ione Belarra
I read in the ARA an excellent one interview by Núria Orriols Guiu with the general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra. At one point in the frameable piece, he asks her if she's in favor of giving the Mossos d'Esquadra powers over immigration. "No one will defend the decentralization of powers more than I," she replies, "but not because of racist politics." And this is how she explains: "Part of the agreement implies that from now on the Mossos d'Esquadra can perform the functions that the National Police does, carrying out racist raids based on ethnic profiling, that is, stopping you for your skin color when you exit the subway, when you're on a bus, in the workplace... What the National Police does now, the National Police would do now."
In other words, wouldn't the Mossos d'Esquadra have powers because the National Police, which has them, exercises them poorly? It's a double standard. capoeira. It's saying that the National Police is bad. And that the Mossos d'Esquadra are bad too. How does she prove the first statement, and especially the second, which hasn't happened yet, but which she envisions?
In Ione Belarra's universe, it seems that pursuing "immigration policy" alone is already "racist policy." Like the other day I was reading, also in ARA, a news story about the Barcelona City Council's Endreça plan. There were those who complained of discriminatory treatment because the brigades "cleaned the ground and sprayed the homeless people's belongings." It's immoral and wrong to spray the homeless people's belongings if it can be avoided, but cleaning the ground with hoses isn't, in itself, discriminatory toward homeless people, and it is very necessary for everyone. "Racist raids based on ethnic profiling?" On the bus? I don't know where he lives, but here where we live, a national police officer hasn't boarded public transport to check for papers for decades. Someone should explain to him that in Barcelona, Rosa Parks couldn't sit down illegally because everyone walks standing because of one ethnic group: the foreigners.
