"How much is it?", "Four and eighty-five."
At the fruit shop on Calle Mayor: "How much is it?" asks the woman in front of me.There are four cone eighty-five", the cashier answers. She, holding his gaze, smiles: "Four eighty-five, right?", giving him the money. "Yes, let him have it Have a nice day!", the caixer said. "Thank you, too," she replied.
The society is multilingual and the contacts between languages are a daily reality in Catalonia. The speakers are multilingual, we connect the languages that we know and the women serve to communicate. The languages of the Speakers of Catalonia are very good: according to some, they have more or less prestige, they are sad and rebuig, shameful and proud, from school and from career. How can we contribute to fostering a good and positive linguistic coexistence
A good integration implies learning the language, and maintaining the language? language d'acollida is responsible for the speakers. Ara bé, how? How can we establish kinder linguistic relationships that promote the linguistic well-being of everyone, both for speakers who accullen and for all speakers who agree?
Multilingual wellbeing consists of being aware of and appreciating the potential of one's own linguistic repertoire and feeling comfortable using it in different personal and professional contexts. In other words, recognising one's own languages and those one learns and feeling comfortable using them to communicate. For this to happen, a favourable environment is needed that is aware that learning a new language means using it, and that you are helped to do so, it involves mixing languages, experimenting with them, feeling embarrassed, perhaps, and feeling helped. Along these lines, the project "Promoting the multilingual wellbeing of teachers", by the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe, explores and designs tools that promote the multilingual wellbeing of teachers and its effects on students. The model of language teaching and learning in Catalonia also points to a more plural approach.
Therefore, patient and persevering speakers are needed, activators of the Catalan language who can bear stares and smile. How can we do this in our daily lives? recasting It is a strategy used in language teaching and learning that consists of correcting the learners' mistakes so that communication is not obstructed. The interlocutor reformulates the response in a corrected way: in the fruit shop the cashier answers in Spanish and the customer reformulates the response in Catalan: an empathetic and friendly linguistic exchange in two languages that promotes multilingual well-being.
Code switching –the code-switching codeswitching- It is also another good permissive strategy that shows us, in the teaching and learning process, that the languages in play are active.Have a nice day "Have a nice day," the cashier tells the woman, a sign that Catalan, in this case, is alive in the cashier's communicative act.
The languages we speak are part of our letter of introduction. LT_LNA~
