Fight against our fear
Most of the deaths in the Ceuta events are Moroccan or sub-Saharan adolescents who responded to a call from social media, a call like a game or a gamble. Who pushed them, who incited and encouraged them? What were they looking for? What were the person or people who made the call, so effective, looking for?
ARA published the testimony of one of the boys who reached land, who said he thought he would find "directions to Madrid and Barcelona", until - he also said - he thought he understood he was "on an island". That he had not reached the level of a video game, where you have many chances to repeat, you die and you come back, you find jewels exploring and you have liquids that give you vitamins and bring you back to life. It was all a joke (the call, let's swim with our mobile phones, let's try it) except for death. These boys - most of the tens of thousands who entered Spain suddenly were boys - have shown a transcendent and lethal frivolity. The same as that of ours, those who live here, and also have mobile phones and also watch social media and follow those who seem to them to "tell the truth".
Europe looks at these adolescents with all suspicion and all fear. They are not "miserable", they are not humble, as expected of the poor, but haughty. They seem arrogant, when they state that they have the right to a hospital because they are in Spain. They are not fleeing a war, but a closed world. They leave home, with the impulsiveness with which we do everything now. Above all, they are many, many, they are very many. The inhabitants of Ceuta are torn between "take the children away" and "we do not need saviors and fathers of the nation to come and save us from them".
One cannot speak of misery, of hunger. The few women who have arrived with babies seem, to the European, irresponsible like them, like these young people who play football on the beach dreaming that someone will sign them. They are frightening because they are many. What can we do but fight against this fear? What can we do but try to ignore other calls, equally frivolous?
