BarcelonaCatalan politics has a significant capacity for innovation. ERC leader Oriol Junqueras has already said he doesn't intend to support the 2025 budget, and we'll see if he will do so for the 2026 budget. But don't worry. A good example is the agreement between Salvador Illa's government, specifically with the Republicans and the Comuns, which guarantees another €2 billion for its operations without any new budgets.
After Jéssica Albiach's party rejected the 2024 budget, which prompted Pere Aragonès to call elections, the Republicans and Socialists are recovering much of what they had agreed to last year. One measure is the selective reduction of personal income tax.
But they're adding new ones, such as allowing individuals to apply for loans from the Catalan Institute of Finance (ICF), or a tax that will double what is charged to those staying in a hotel, apartment, or campsite, to attract the Comuns. And, in the end, everyone is happy. Who said you can't govern without a budget?
