Boí Valley

Skiing, hiking, cradle of Romanesque art and thermal baths

Families are one of the main types of visitors to the Boí Valley, especially during school holidays and long weekends. Throughout the year, they have a range of activities tailored to this group, including the Boí Taüll ski resort and snow sports in winter, and hiking in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, visits to the Romanesque Centre, and the "Eyes of History" (a cultural attraction) in Caldes de Boí. There are also children's playgrounds in all the villages, themed around important features of the valley: nature, the Fallas festival, Romanesque art, the Starlight Reserve, and more.

The Boí Valley Tourist Office recommends that families visit the Sant Climent de Taüll video map, participate in the Taüll digital treasure hunt, or take a snowshoeing excursion (if it has snowed) through the Planell de Aigüestortes and Estany Llong. They also suggest an orienteering course in Boruela or the High Pyrenees, and a lower area with an ideal space for beginners to ski or snowboard, as well as a snow park where children can play and have fun. Furthermore, families shouldn't miss the opportunity to sample typical local dishes such as vianda (a type of stew), escudella (a hearty Catalan stew), a good grilled entrecote, or an organic beef burger from the Boí Valley.

Àneu Valleys

Snow activities, cycling, deer rutting and birdwatching

Families are also a common sight in the Àneu Valleys, which encompass the municipalities of Esterri d'Àneu, La Guingueta de Àneu, Alt Àneu, and Espot. In autumn, families flock to observe the deer rut, while in winter they prefer skiing, snowshoeing, or other snow activities. "This group is showing increasing interest in the area, both for our flora and fauna and because we believe that hiking and the mountains are always a great way to disconnect, breathe, and unwind," explains the Valls d'Àneu Tourist Office.

Activities such as fishing (especially popular with French visitors), deer rutting, mountain biking areas or cycling paths, the greenway expressly created in La Guingueta d'Àneu, with viewpoints to observe the birds of the region, and the Starlight, which can be enjoyed throughout the year from different points in the valley, are not without interest. So too are emblematic dishes of the area such as escudella, trinchado, civet, foal meat, girella and palpís (made with lamb meat), an exquisite variety of sausages (among which secallona and cheeses stand out), artisan yogurts and mató.

Pallars Sobirà

Mountain sports, culture and authentic rural experiences

During autumn, families visiting Pallars Sobirà take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy active tourism and adventure sports such as rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa River; combine hiking and nature exploration in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, Boumort, or the Orígenes Geopark; enjoy rural experiences to learn about mountain life, such as accompanying shepherds with their flocks or discovering how local foods are produced; or make cultural and heritage visits to the Llessui Shepherds' Ecomuseum or the Gerri de la Sal Museum. In winter, they opt for skiing, snowshoeing, and activities at the Port Ainé snow park, or take excursions through the snow-covered mountains on snowshoes or walks along the riverbanks.

"Families value activities that combine nature, tradition and local gastronomy, and Pallars Sobirà fits perfectly with this demand, because it offers experiential activities that allow children to discover nature and culture in a direct and fun way," highlights the local Tourist Office, which also recommends tasting typical Pallars products and dishes prepared with chicken, pork, sausage, bacon, noodles, cabbage, potatoes, beans and pears, and the Filiberto, a typical dessert, whose origin dates back to a local restaurateur from the Àssua Valley, from the Casa Kiko restaurant in Llessui, and which over time has become a classic.
