The weather

The heaviest rain moves towards the Girona region

More than 120 l/m² have already fallen in some municipalities of Baix Llobregat

The weather is not clearing up completely and instability will continue to mark the meteorological situation in the next few hours. These will be the last lashes of the storm. In fact, the DANA has been moving away and diluting, but the entry of a front from the west and the presence of cold air over our vertical will favor the discharge of some showers in our territory, especially on the Barcelona coast. Over the last few hours, very significant amounts have accumulated in some places on the coast and in the pre-coast (at the end of this information you can see more details). ~BK_LINE_BREAK~ Monday: tomorrow with locally intense rain

A warm, humid easterly flow will continue to bring cloudiness to the coastal façade which, together with the cold air from the pocket still over the Iberian Peninsula, will favour the appearance of showers irregularly distributed in the pre-coastline and also in the 'Ebro, where the rain could be intense again. During the morning and midday the showers will reach the central coast or the central and southern pre-coastline. They will be scattered showers, but locally they will discharge with great intensity and in the form of storms. In the rest of the country there will be clouds and clearings, with some fog banks inland, especially in Ponent or the Vic plain. Daytime temperatures will move between 20 ºC and 24 ºC, with a fairly high ambient humidity. Nighttime minimum temperatures will again be similar to the previous night.

The easterly component wind will ease and make the maritime situation improve progressively, after many days of rough seas. ~BK_LINE_BREAK~

All of this means that the warnings issued by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia are still in effect due to the possibility of heavy rain and significant accumulations of water in the coastal and pre-coastal regions, especially in the south of the country. The AEMET is maintaining the orange warning in effect for the Tarragona coast and pre-coastal region and the Barcelona pre-coastal region, and the red warning for the Barcelona coast.

In addition, severe weather warnings are also in effect in the Barcelona metropolitan area and in other inland areas. This warning indicates that extreme phenomena such as hail, cracks or tornadoes may occur and that, at its highest level, it affects the regions of Baix Llobregat, Garraf, Baix Penedès, Alt Penedès, and Anoia. At orange level we find regions such as Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental, Bages and other regions in the north of Lleida.

Improvement for Tuesday and new showers on Thursday

The trend is for the storm to gradually fade away and move away from Tuesday, with less probability of showers or, in any case, some weak showers that would be restricted to the central coast and the Costa Brava, with less intensity and already very dispersed. On Tuesday, therefore, the weather will improve and there will be more clear skies, with some fog banks early in the morning in the Ebro, in Ponent and in central Catalonia. On Wednesday the weather will remain stable, but between Thursday and Friday the models again indicate rain. We will have to keep an eye on it, because the presence of cold air in the upper layers of the troposphere and a relatively warm sea can cause showers to fall again with a vengeance in Catalonia.

Temperatures will not change significantly throughout the week, with a slight increase midweek.

Balance of the latest storms

Between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning, storms have caused some incidents and flooding in Garraf, Baix Penedès and Alt Penedès, but also in Tarragonès and nearby regions. Of these downpours, we highlight the following accumulated amounts (up to 11 am):

  • Viladecans: 131 l/m²
  • Castelldefels: >100 l/m²
  • Tarragona: 50-100 l/m²
  • Torredembarra: 51 l/m²
  • Vacarizas: 39 l/m²
  • Barcelona (University Zone): 33 l/m²

DANA Balance Sheet

This last week, the DANA has hit the Valencian Community the hardest, with torrential and extraordinary rainfall that on Tuesday exceeded 400 or 500 l/m² locally. The most affected regions have been Ribera Alta, Canal de Navarro, Hoya de Buñol and Plana de Utiel-Requena, as well as the entire Júcar river basin, with the Magro and Turia rivers as sad protagonists. It is worth highlighting the 631 l/m² of Turís-Canyapar (Ribera Alta), a record similar to that provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the same locality: 618 l/m². Also noteworthy are the nearly 500 l/m² accumulated in Chiva (Foia de Buñol) on Tuesday, which according to Aemet are the largest amounts of water fallen in 24 hours in the Valencian Country since the cold drop of 11 September 1996, when 520 l/m² accumulated in Tavernes de la Valldigna, becoming a new record for accumulated rainfall in one hour in the Iberian Peninsula. ~BK_LINEBREAK~ It is the most important storm of this century in the area and the fifth wettest in the last hundred years. Also worth noting are the 395 l/m² recorded in Pedralba, the 326 in Setaigües, the 306 in Requena and the 305 in Buñol, according to data from the Valencian Meteorological Association (Avamet). ~BK_LINEBREAK~ ~BK_LINEBREAK~

The images of the catastrophe caused by the floods and the inundations have left everyone speechless. There were even some tornadoes in the municipalities of Carlet, Benifaió and Alginet. There have also been serious problems and fatalities from the DANA in other areas of the Peninsula, such as in the provinces of Albacete and Málaga. On Friday, torrential rain was also concentrated in the Andalusian province of Huelva, where more than 100 l/m² fell locally during the night (138 l/m² in Cartaya) and in Mallorca, where more than 100 l/m² also fell (113 l/m² in Bunyola).
