Mobile support for title validation has been available for two and a half years It was only available for Android devices with NFC technology — a technology for connecting devices and exchanging data in a confined environment — although the card could be recharged and consulted using all smartphones. Now, the T-mobility Wallet is already available for iPhone, a new feature that improves the travel experience for public transport users. The possibility of validating tickets directly with the mobile phone, without the need for a physical card, arrived on the iPhone on December 27 to offer greater comfort and security to travelers.

The launch of the app

Following a successful verification phase, the system was opened to all users to link their data and begin validating the titles with their mobile phones. Currently, more than 120,000 purchases of digital titles and more than 2 million validations from Apple devices have been recorded in the integrated area of Barcelona.

One card, more than one title

To access this new feature, users must download the "T-Mobility Wallet" application from the App Store and link it to one of the compatible applications: T-Mobility, TMB App or FGC T-Mobilitat. With this new option, users can load up to five different tickets onto their mobile phone, a much larger capacity than the physical card, which is limited to two tickets. Users can thus manage multiple tickets and even tickets from different fare zones, all from their device.

With the integration, T-Mobility users with iPhone devices will be able to enjoy the same convenience and security in their validations as Android users. This improvement is great news for all public transport users, who will now be able to choose from all the contactless validation options and, if they wish, do without their physical card.

Barcelona, the second European metropolis to allow validation with iPhone

Due to Apple's restrictions on access to the NFC chip, only the T-Mobility app for Android allowed the validation of transport tickets. Android, with a more open policy, facilitated the use of this functionality from the beginning.

In 2024, following the European Commission's (EC) demand that Apple open up NFC technology, the ATM submitted objections to also allow its use in public transport. These were accepted last July, which has allowed the development of a digital wallet for iPhone that emulates the T-Mobility card just like Android does.

This places the integrated area of Barcelona as the second major metropolis in Europe to offer this functionality - after Paris, which achieved it before the 2024 Olympic Games.
