Together in the face of silence on the front pages

In its attempt to avoid being overtaken by the (far)right by Aliança Catalana, Junts has made a dramatic move and broken with Sánchez. Potentially, this could mean the end of the current legislature and lead to elections in which the hard right is poised for victory, at least according to press polls. It's no surprise, therefore, that all four major Madrid newspapers are featuring this story on their front pages. Is the relationship between these media outlets and Puigdemont's party so tense that they don't want to grant them this media reward, the only benefit the Puigdemont supporters might gain from this gesture of rupture? These are two media outlets whose editorial line has traditionally supported the opposition, so the front-page silence can be interpreted as a reprimand for having strayed from the straight and narrow path of negotiation with Spain.

The big winner in this movement isn't mentioned on the front pages, but it's none other than Aliança Catalana, which is making Junts dance to its tune. A bad sign. There's a lot of talk about the left's inability to have a valid narrative in these times. But the parties that are directly losing votes to the far right are also feeling the pinch, and to stem the exodus, they risk being perceived as a weak imitation, so it's better to vote for the original. It's a significant dilemma they face. And it will be interesting to see the impact on the handful of media outlets that until now loved (or tolerated) them for being guarantors of the investiture bloc.
