What exactly is BDSM?

Perhaps you've heard of it, or perhaps its vintage name sounds more familiar: sadomasochism. But BDSM is much more than an imaginary world loaded with leather, myths, and misunderstandings. Under these acronyms are grouped erotic practices such as bondage, discipline, domination, submission, sadism, and masochism. And, above all, there is an indispensable condition: consent.

In fact, if there is a key idea to understand BDSM, it is this: it's not about hurting, it's about playing with agreed-upon limits. That's why, within this world, the SSC principle is often mentioned: Safe, Sane, and Consensual. That is, practices that are discussed, accepted, and cared for before, during, and after. This includes knowing limits, using appropriate materials, and agreeing on safety words that allow stopping or redirecting the situation at any time.

Why can it be pleasurable? Because human eroticism is not linear or simple. We like contrasts: cold and hot, sweet and savory. Also, in some contexts, pleasure and pain. But it's not just a matter of physical sensations. Often, what is exciting has to do with the meaning of the game: surrendering, maintaining control, trusting, exploring a fantasy.

In this sense, BDSM reminds us of something important: sexuality is much more than genitals. It is also imagination, ritual, sensuality, narrative, and play. Perhaps that's why it sparks so much curiosity: because it broadens the idea of what we understand by eroticism. And that is one of the best fuels for igniting desire.
