85% of Catalan-language films are not released in the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, or Andorra

BarcelonaOf the 114 films released in commercial theaters in Catalonia in 2025, only 20 were shown in the Valencian Community (17.5%), 17 in Andorra (14.9%), and 16 in the Balearic Islands (14%). There was no trace of 85% of the films, according to a report by Plataforma per la Llengua (Platform for the Language), published just before the 18th Gaudí Awards. Only two films were released in all territories, and not simultaneously. Wolfgang and Sea and skyIf we remove Andorra from the equation, which has a different distribution system than the Spanish state, there would only be five films that could be seen simultaneously in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, four in their original version and one in a dubbed version, theanime of Detective Conan. In fact, outside the Principality, films dubbed in Catalan are practically nonexistent. In Andorra, however, where Catalan is the only official language, Catalan dubbing is the norm, with the biggest box office hits arriving there.

In the case of WolfgangThe film, shot in Catalan, didn't reach the Balearic Islands in its original version until after audience complaints. The lack of a law regulating the distribution and exhibition of Catalan-language films in territories outside the Principality, coupled with a lack of linguistic awareness among most exhibitors, renders Catalan cinema invisible in other Catalan-speaking territories—despite its proven success with audiences in Catalonia. In these areas, Catalan-language premieres are essentially concentrated in two cinemas: the Multicines Sucre in Vila-real (owned by the same people as the Sucre cinemas in Vic) and the CineCiutat in Palma. The Plataforma per la Llengua (Platform for the Language) denounces the systematic violation of Catalonia's film law, which establishes minimum quotas for Catalan-language films, due to a lack of regulatory implementation and the absence of sanctions. The organization, who prepared the reportIt calls on the administrations to increase aid for dubbing and subtitling in Catalan, to condition aid on effective promotion of Catalan versions, to incentivize theaters to program with subsidies, and to create a Catalan Cinema Day.
