Ukraine launches one of its biggest attacks against Moscow coinciding with the Russian elections

The governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, has stated that the fatalities are a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man who were at home at the time of the attack.

According to the mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, this is the most significant attack recorded in Moscow. In fact, during this Saturday, Russian defenses shot down more than 1,600 drones in the vicinity of the capital. "The largest enemy drone attack ever perpetrated against Moscow has been repelled," wrote Sobyanin on social media, where he added that it is an "unprecedented attack."

The drones that ended up impacting did so at an oil refinery and a residential building. At the same time, they forced the suspension of activity at Moscow airports and nearly 30 planes had to land in other cities. According to the mayor, the attack aimed to influence the Russian legislative elections, which began on Friday and will conclude tonight.

Last day of elections

The elections, without guarantees, arrive at a time when Vladimir Putin's popularity is not at its best. Although the elections are manipulated by the Kremlin and United Russia, the Russian president's party will win overwhelmingly, the group accumulates unfavorable results in the polls due to the context of social unrest caused by economic problems, internet blockades, and fatigue from the war against Ukraine.

The pacifist opposition has been banned from the electoral call, and at this moment, official polls give Putin's party between 47% and 53% of the votes, figures that do not correspond with the historic low of 27% of voting intention that United Russia had a few months ago.
