Israel accuses Iran of violating the ceasefire and announces an attack on Tehran.

Donald Trump announced a ceasefire early Tuesday morning, and Netanyahu accepted it.

WashingtonIsraeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the strikes against Tehran after accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire announced hours earlier by US President Donald Trump. "In light of Iran's blatant violation of the ceasefire declared by the US President—by firing missiles at Israel—and in accordance with the Israeli government's policy of responding decisively to any violation, I have ordered the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to continue high-intensity operations against regime assets and terrorist infrastructure in Tehran," he said. Minutes earlier, the military had issued a statement saying it was working to destroy the Iranian missiles after detecting one launch.

Although the Iranian military has denied firing missiles at Israel, Israel says this constitutes a violation of the fragile ceasefire announced by Donald Trump on Monday night. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the acceptance of the proposal early Tuesday morning, arguing that Israel had achieved all objectives of the bombing campaign against Iran that began on June 13. "In light of the achievement of the objectives of the operation, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has accepted the president's proposal for a mutual ceasefire," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that Iran would stop its retaliatory attacks as long as Israel stopped attacking as of 4:00 a.m. in Tehran.

Donald Trump's announcement was followed by hours of confusion due to Tel Aviv's initial silence and contradictory messages from Tehran. The US president announced this morning that both countries had agreed to a 12-hour ceasefire, and that if this period is exceeded without attacks, the war would be over. Israel and Iran have fully and mutually agreed that there will be a full ceasefire (in approximately 6 hours, when both countries have concluded and completed their final missions) for 12 hours, at which point the war will be considered over. The Republican wrote on Truth Social two days after bombing Iranian nuclear facilities.

"During each period of ceasefire, the other side will remain peaceful and respectful. Assuming all goes as it should, and it will, I want to commend both countries, Israel and Iran, for their resilience, courage, and intelligence in ending what should be called the '12 Day War,'" Trump declared on his social media.

Reciprocal Attacks

By the time the truce went into effect, Israel had recorded five Iranian attacks. However, despite the reciprocal attacks, the ceasefire went into effect at 6:00 a.m. (Catalonia time). An Iranian missile killed at least four people in Beersheba, the largest city in southern Israel, which has closed its airspace indefinitely. Israel, for its part, has attacked several targets in Tehran.

Initially, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that "for now" there was no agreement on a ceasefire or an end to military operations, but affirmed that Tehran was willing to stop responding "as long as the Israeli regime ends its illegal aggression against the Iranian people before 4:00 a.m.," he wrote in a post on X. He added that "the final decision" on the ceasefire would be made "later."

Fifteen minutes later, in another post, Araghchi declared the end of the attacks. "The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the last minute, at 4 a.m.," he wrote, implying that they were ending hostilities and that he was declaring the beginning of a truce. Iranian state television announced a ceasefire between the two countries, which, according to the presenter, was "imposed on the enemy" due to the regime's continued attacks on Israel. Three hours after the Iranian minister announced the end of hostilities, Israel announced that Iran had launched up to three waves of missiles.

The start of the truce announced by Trump was not simultaneous, but was supposed to begin at 12 p.m. for Iran (6 a.m. Tuesday in Catalonia) and six hours later for Israel. This difference was justified so that both countries could complete the actions they were carrying out. At the time Trump announced the deal, Israeli warplanes had just entered Iranian airspace.

A change of pace.

In a matter of hours, the US president has gone from full of bellicose rhetoric and suggesting "regime change" to congratulating the ayatollahs and saying "God bless Iran." On Sunday afternoon, in another post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that if "the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again - to make Iran great again - why shouldn't there be regime change?" The idea contradicted the official position of the White House, which until now had made it clear that the attack on the nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan only sought to end Iran's nuclear program and not attack the regime. more than a dozen missiles against the US base at Al Udeid in Qatar in response to the attack on its nuclear facilities. an indicator of the Iranians' willingness to de-escalate the situation. After the attack on Al Udeid - which resulted in no fatalities - Trump has shown himself willing to reduce tensions.

The official reasons given by Israel on June 13 for attacking Iran were the threat posed to Tel Aviv by Tehran's potential for developing nuclear weapons. This same argument was used by Washington on Saturday to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities in the appearance that they had been "completely destroyed." In an interview on Fox, Vice President JD Vance celebrated that Iran is now "incapable" of building a nuclear bomb after the US attacks, he claimed that "Iran is not building a nuclear weapon, and Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear programs he suspended in 2003."
