NATO planes shoot down a drone in Latvian airspace
The incursion of a device coming from Russia has activated the air alert in the country
BarcelonaNATO aircraft shot down a drone in Latvia's airspace on Monday. This was reported by the Baltic country's military, after issuing an air threat alert for its eastern regions bordering Russia and Belarus, in which it asked the population to stay home. Minutes later, it deactivated the alert. An army spokesperson told the Reuters news agency that at least one drone had entered Latvian airspace from Russia.
within the framework of the Eastern Sentinel initiativeThese kinds of episodes, in which military drones venture into the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (countries bordering Russia), have fueled concerns that the war in Ukraine is spreading to NATO's northern borders. As Ukraine intensifies long-range attacks on Russian oil transport ports in the Baltic Sea, some of its drones have missed their targets and triggered security warnings in neighboring countries.
The interception on Monday occurred within the framework of the Eastern Sentinel initiative, promoted this fall by the Atlantic Alliance precisely after an unprecedented number of Russian drones and aircraft violated the airspace of several allied countries in September. This situation, which included incursions of Russian drones into Polish airspace and combat aircraft into Estonian airspace, led to security consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. For the Eastern Sentinel initiative, focused on NATO's eastern flank, allies contribute with additional capabilities and resources such as combat aircraft, helicopters, transport aircraft, air defense systems, and surveillance aircraft.
