BarcelonaIsrael launched an attack on Sunday in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, in an operation targeting the assassination of a Hezbollah leader, according to an announcement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The statement from the Israeli prime minister's office said the target was the Islamist militia's "chief of staff." At least two dozen people were reportedly wounded and taken to local hospitals, according to medical sources. The attack affected a main road in the southern suburbs of Beirut, where residents told Reuters they heard the roar of warplanes before the explosion. People ran from apartment buildings in fear of further attacks, a journalist told the British news agency. The statement from Netanyahu's office said Israel would continue to fight "terrorism" on multiple fronts. "We will continue to do everything necessary to prevent Hezbollah from regaining its ability to threaten us," he says. This November, Israel has intensified airstrikes in southern Lebanon, where it is pressing with a campaign of almost daily attacks that Tel Aviv says are designed to block a Hezbollah military reactivation in the border area.
