BarcelonaThe German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, assures that 80% of the more than 900,000 Syrian citizens residing in Germany will have to return to their country in the next three years. He stated this at a meeting with the Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Berlin. According to the Chancellor, the Syrian leader also wishes this.

Merz has urged the establishment of a "reliable" return mechanism to repatriate Syrian citizens who have committed offenses and do not have valid residence permits. According to Merz, these repatriates "will play an important role in Syria after years of destruction of companies, schools, kindergartens, and hospitals." For this reason, he has proposed creating a joint working group in which the Ministries of Interior and Economic Development participate, to take advantage of the favorable context in Syria, where the situation has improved one year after the end of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"The political stability and economic growth of Syria will be decisive for the reconstruction to be successful," Merz assured. And he highlighted the "favorable climate for investment in the country," also for German companies.
