Genocide and malnutrition in Gaza
Every day, more Western institutions and organizations are calling the situation in the Gaza Strip a genocide. After nearly 22 months of continued collective punishment against 2.4 million Palestinians, the situation could not be more horrific, nor could the passivity of the Western community be more glaring, as it witnesses the tragedy without intervening.
More than 55,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, an incredibly high figure, to which must be added the number of dead still lying under the rubble of destroyed buildings that have not been cleared. As for housing, it is estimated that more than 70% of the entire Strip is uninhabitable.
According to data provided by the Gaza Ministry of Health, part of the Hamas government, more than 150,000 Palestinians have been injured in the 22 months of killing, mostly children and women. Most of the population is confined to a small area of the city of Rafah., besieged by Israeli soldiers from the south, via the Philadelphia Corridor, and from the north, via the Morag Corridor.
The future of these people is uncertain. This week, Israel confirmed that it is working with the United States to find countries willing to host hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. According to Israel, the countries that have shown interest so far are Indonesia, Ethiopia, and Libya. Palestinians who leave Gaza in this dramatic situation will probably never have the chance to return. Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump talk about voluntary emigration, but Palestinians must choose between continuing to live under daily bombs and without food, or leaving forever with their entire families to a third country that has been extorted into taking them.
Only bones and skin
The images of crowds of people at food distribution points are a legacy. Hundreds of children, women, and men ask for a plate or a container filled for the whole family. a scene that is repeated daily and that does not prevent people from dying of hunger. On Tuesday, 15 deaths from malnutrition were recorded in the Gaza Strip. We're now accustomed to seeing children, and adults too, with a physiognomy similar to that of the Jews when they were liberated from the concentration camps at the end of World War II: only the bones and skin left after spending many days without eating anything.
The American-Israeli group distributing the food is run from the Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv. There is not enough food for the population. Horrifying images are emerging of people waiting for food while Israeli soldiers fire on crowds. Dozens of people die in these circumstances every day, and the international community does absolutely nothing.
These are images that Israeli television broadcasts daily, even if they are cut out. and only for a few seconds, and not the strongest ones. But international channels broadcast them constantly, so Israelis can't claim ignorance. Viewers simply don't react in any way. Ohad Hemo, Channel 12's Palestinian correspondent, said on Wednesday that there is hunger in the Strip, that some people go without food for days on end. Those responsible for the massacre, like Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, deny this. They have an arrest warrant from the Hague Tribunal, But no one trusts that the orders will ever be executed.
