From prodigy to pariah: the outlandish story of the star Cambridge academic accused of plagiarism

In 2023, the news that Arday had secured a professorship in sociology at Cambridge went around the world: both his personal story and his professional achievements, in addition to being only 37 years old and symbolizing a triumph against the rise of racist discourse, made his figure an emblem of progress within the institution and in the academic world in general. Now, after his resignation, professors are calling for university leaders to take responsibility for this appointment and accuse the institution of hiring him to achieve a "quick fix" to improve staff diversity. According to The Guardian, professors are circulating a letter calling for an investigation into the processes and circumstances under which Arday received the position, and they assert that Cambridge's leadership is guilty of racism because, according to them, they appointed him solely because he was Black, which gave the university a veneer of modernity.

The convoluted story of Jason Arday

Born in the United Kingdom in 1985 and raised in south London by Ghanaian migrant parents, Arday has always maintained that he was diagnosed with autism as a child, that he didn't speak until he was 11, and that he didn't learn to read or write until he was 18. Despite this, he managed to study and obtain a doctorate in education, the thesis of which has been accused of plagiarism. This and other accusations, also concerning his merits and biography, have been rebutted by the former professor, who claims it is a racist campaign to discredit him.

But his story of overcoming adversity is not limited to autism alone. He claims to have run 30 marathons in 35 days to raise money for charity. According to The Guardian, the professor also claims that while running, he had an epileptic seizure and fractured a leg, but that, despite this, he ran nine more races to achieve his goal. In addition to his sporting achievements, Arday claims to have participated in charitable causes. In media interviews, he has stated that he has raised £5 million for charities over a 20-year period, an impressive amount for a person who is not famous. Among the causes he is said to have supported are the installation of water facilities in South America and Africa, although WaterAid, the organization he claims to have worked with, states that it does not work with volunteers on its projects.

The controversial sociologist claims that the media attention he received upon becoming the youngest black professor at Cambridge, at 37, made him a focus of negative attention. It is confirmed that Arday experienced racist abuse and, according to him, a decapitated pig's head was delivered to his parents' home, and a masked intruder went to his office numerous times with a knife. However, the intruder was not captured on camera, and the professor neither reported any of the intrusions nor informed his colleagues of the situation. In response to an investigation by The Guardian into the pig's head incident, the London police concluded that the details Arday provided were "categorically incorrect," which is why they decided not to open an investigation into the matter.

With this avalanche of rumors and controversies, the professor's academic integrity has been increasingly called into question, and the university has ended up announcing new investigations into his qualifications and professional career. Cambridge had defended the academic from the outset. But investigations published in newspapers such as The Times or The Telegraph increased the pressure on the university, which has been forced to act. The first accusations focused on his doctoral thesis: the media have published hundreds of paragraphs from Arday's thesis that were identical or nearly identical to those of Paula Zwozdiak-Myers' thesis, published in 2009, six years earlier. He has categorically denied any plagiarism, and the university where he presented his thesis, John Moores, has not taken action against him.

To the accusations about the thesis are added others about some of his recently published works, which point to numerous errors. The Times published an analysis that concluded that some of his research contained "impossible" evidence and was full of inconsistencies. But there's more: Arday claims to have obtained several prestigious scholarships and professorships at other universities, and to have been a visiting professor at Ohio State University and the University of Glasgow, a claim that both universities have denied.

Finally, seeing the increase in media pressure, Arday has decided to resign from his position as a professor, and it would not be surprising if he were to pause the publication of his memoirs, which was scheduled for this August by Simon & Schuster with the title Great and unfortunate things [Great and unfortunate things].

In England, the accusations against Arday have led to an authentic cultural war. From the progressive sphere, he has been defended to the extreme, and support petitions have even been signed claiming that the professor is the victim of a racist defamation campaign. For conservatives, on the other hand, the only reason Arday has managed to deceive so many people for so long is due to the fear generated by denouncing black people, an action that can lead to an accusation of racism.
