The anti-abortion agenda makes its way into the PP
BarcelonaStep by step, whether forced by pacts with Vox or on its own initiative, the PP is adopting the postulates of the far-right in different areas, such as immigration, gender violence, or, now, the anti-abortion agenda. Alberto Núñez Feijóo announced this Monday that when he reaches Moncloa he will promote a law for the unborn so that women can receive aid from the very moment of conception, when they confirm their pregnancy. It is a supposed law that is presented as social and in defense of the family, but which in reality seeks to establish an ideological principle that conditions women's rights, which is that, as Isabel Díaz Ayuso herself said, "the unborn is a person from the first minute".
The implications of this principle for a right like abortion are very clear: if a fertilized egg is already a person with rights, abortion would, in the end, be murder. Obviously, the PP tries to disconnect the two things, but in the end what is being imposed is the mental framework of the far-right and ultra-Catholic groups like HazteOír, which start from the basis of criminalizing women and subjecting them to enormous emotional blackmail before they decide about their own bodies. Let's remember that Ayuso has not only implemented this aid system that seeks to instill in women a deep sense of guilt if they intend to have an abortion, but has also refused to register doctors who object to performing abortions.
The result is that today it is much more difficult to have an abortion in a supposedly modern and open city like Madrid than in other parts of Spain, particularly Catalonia. The best example of this retrograde and sexist atmosphere that is imposed in the capital of the State is a tweet from the chief of staff of the Madrid president, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, where he stated the following: "Ayuso's law of the conceived but not born. This means that, just after fertilisation, before showering, what the woman has in her womb is a person with rights. Rights also for her family. This is the revolution against the woke and leftist culture".
With this step, Feijóo not only certifies his iron alliance with Vox, but also delves into the Ayusist paradigm of cultural war with the left and, therefore, demonstrates that he is willing to roll back social conquests, something the PP had never done until now. Because it is true that the PP voted against the divorce law and abortion law (when it was AP) or the gay marriage law, but when it came to government, it did not dare to repeal them. At most, it made cosmetic changes. At first, it seemed that Feijóo was rather in favor of this line of not questioning social advances and looking forward. But it is becoming increasingly clear that his intention is to look back and treat women according to the most reactionary and chauvinistic vision.
