Amazon will invest €33.7 billion in Spain to boost data centers in Europe

Amazon's Vice President of Legal Affairs, David Zapolsky, announced an increase of €18 billion in planned investment in Spain, bringing the company's total planned investment to €33.7 billion. The company made the announcement at a conference during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, explaining that the investment aims to strengthen data center and AI infrastructure in Aragon, where it has its data centers. The Spanish government was quick to react to the news, which represents Amazon's largest investment outside the United States. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on social media that this milestone demonstrates that Spain "is a safe bet."
For his part, the Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, Óscar López, stated that the news reflects the positive outcome of the government's negotiations with the multinational. "This is the largest investment by the technology company in our country and will serve to expand and strengthen the data center infrastructure, providing advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities to organizations throughout Europe," the minister noted.
29,900 jobs
It is estimated that the total planned investment in Spain by Amazon Web Services (AWS) Europe, headquartered in Aragon, will contribute €31.7 billion to Spain's total GDP by 2035 and generate an average of 29,900 full-time jobs annually in local companies, including direct, indirect, and induced employment. Of these, 6,700 are full-time jobs resulting from Amazon's direct investment in multiple categories, including highly skilled personnel in data center operations and employees of AWS suppliers, such as facility construction workers and data center security personnel, among others. Furthermore, Amazon also plans to build supply chain-related facilities in Aragon that will directly support data center operations in Spain and Europe. Since arriving in Spain in 2011, Amazon has invested more than 20 billion euros in the country in commercial operations, logistics network, and infrastructure. cloud and AI, and in community support and innovation programs for customers and businesses. Monday's announcement coincides with Amazon's 15th anniversary in Spain.
