'Sirat' and 'Los domingos' lead the Goya Award nominations
The other favorites of the Spanish Film Academy are 'Maspalomas', 'La cena' and 'Sorda'
BarcelonaTwo very different liturgies provide the context for the two films most nominated for the Goya awards, which will be presented on February 28 in Barcelona: Sundays, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, with 13 nominations, and Sirado, by Oliver Laxe, with 11. One has the Catholic Church as its backdrop, and the other, culture radishAnd both have generated intense debate, both among critics and viewers. One excessively strains the dynamic of moral equidistance when it comes to a teenager's religious vocation, and the other hammers home the point of so-called "cinema of cruelty." In any case, they are two works with a great deal of cinematic substance that manage to extend their impact beyond the closing credits.
Obviously, both Sirado as Sundays They are vying for the top prize for best film, a category in which they compete with Dinner, by Manuel Gómez Pereira; Maspalomas, by Aitor Arregi and Jose Mari Goenaga; and Deafby Eva Libertad. Ruiz de Azúa and Laxe are also among the five candidates for best director, along with Carla Simón for PilgrimageAlbert Serra by Afternoon of solitude (which is nominated for best documentary) and Arregi and Goenaga.
Among the 11 nominations of Sirado There are none in the six acting categories, while Sundays It has garnered five nominations: Best Actress (Patricia López Arnaiz), Best Actor (Miguel Garcés), Best Supporting Actress (Nagore Aramburu), Best Supporting Actor (Juan Minujín), and Best New Actress (Blanca Soroa). However, both films are nominated for Best Cinematography (Barcelona native Bet Rourich for Sundays and Mauro Herce, also from Barcelona, for Sirado), original screenplay, production design, editing and sound, in addition to directing and film.
The other films with the most nominations are Maspalomas, with 9; Dinner, with 8; Deaf, The captive and The tigers, with 7 each; Pilgrimage, with 6, and City without sleep, with 5. Carla Simón, who with Pilgrimage It leads the Gaudí nominations with 13, but hasn't received as much support from Spanish academics, although it appears in categories such as Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Myriam Gallego), Best New Actress (Llucía García), and Best New Actor (Mitch). Also noteworthy is the strong performance ofStrange riverThe debut film by Jaume Claret Muxart, which has nominations for best new director and best new actor (Jan Monter Palau).
The Cervantes Brothers
Established as two talents of Catalan acting, siblings Ángela and Álvaro Cervantes are among the nominees for best actress and best supporting actor: she for The fury, the film by Barcelona native Gemma Blasco, and he for his role in Deaf, the film by Eva Libertad. Ángela will compete for the Goya with Nora Navas (My friend Eva), Patricia López Arnaiz (Sundays), Antonia Zegers (The turtle) and Susana Abaitua (A ghost in the battle). And Álvaro, with Miguel Rellán (The captive), Juan Minujín (Sundays), Kandido Uranga (Maspalomas) and Tamar Novas (Rondallas).
The award for best leading actor will be decided between two performers who have not yet received a Goya –Miguel Garcés for Sundays and Jose Ramón Soroiz for Maspalomas– and three who already have one under their belt: like Alberto San Juan, who, because of his role in Dinner It's nominated for its third Goya Award and already has a leading lady. Under the stars (2007) and one as a supporting actor for Sentimental (2020); Manolo Solo, candidate for A Portuguese fifthHe was the best supporting actor for Too late for anger (2017), and Mario Casas, who won the award for best protagonist for Thou shalt not kill (2021) and February 28 could be repeated thanks to the solid interpretation regarding Very far, the first feature film by Barcelona native Gerard Oms, which is also nominated for the Best New Director award.
Catalan cinema is also very well represented in categories such as animated film, in which it is competing Barracuda's Treasure and Olivia and the Invisible EarthquakeAnd, as usual, among the Catalan nominees are professionals who have won awards in previous editions, such as the cinematographer Pau Esteve Birba (nominated for The tigers) and Mauro Herce (Sirado) and the editors Andrés Gil (Sundays) and Bernat Vilaplana (A ghost in the battle), who could win his fourth Goya. Isaki Lacuesta has the third award within his grasp if Flowers for AntonioThe film, which he co-directed with Elena Molina, received the Goya Award for Best Documentary.
