  • Nits d'Occident Festival. Pedralbes Gardens. July 1, 2026

The Nights of the West in the Jardins de Pedralbes began on Wednesday with the characteristic scent of carefree summer festivals, especially the so-called festivals boutique with village. The group chosen to open the 2026 edition was Taburete, the band of Willy Bárcenas and Antón Carreño. Everything within a fairly moderate order: among the more than 2,300 people who filled the venue, there was only one spectator waving a discreet constitutional Spanish flag, and the chants against Pedro Sánchez that have been frequent in other Taburete concerts were not heard. Sense at the upper, so who knows if because they already assume that the Spanish president has his days numbered or because Pedralbes has been weighed.

The concert had a crowd completely devoted; devoted and forgiving when Bárcenas's impetus involved slips in tuning, especially in 2018: odyssea in space and The last flowers, or when environmental carelessness made him lose the thread of the lyrics in Leap of faith. On the tour of the album The dog that smokes (2025), which is also the tenth anniversary of the group, Taburete takes the stage as an octet, with trumpeter Patxi Urchegui taking on a sufficiently relevant role to add color to a songbook that walks between Julio Iglesias and Melendi. There are excursions into indie rock in the live reading of Masters of the piano bar, various Latin excursions (cumbia in 5 senses, something similar to sound in Leap of faith) and keyboard details that seek recognition of rock classics in One-eyed deer. The public responded positively to all the derivatives, more euphoric, of course, when the injected dopamine in the verses exploded in the chorus and when the repertoire moved through songs like Mermaids (which Bárcenas sang among the public), Walter and the anthem Wine and cement. Pedralbes celebrated Taburete's musical proposal and also its poetic side, even when the voice intensely sings verses that address the rhetoric of love without giving it their all. For example, when in Open vein sings: "And I could never have imagined that you would have half / of my heart / open in a vein. / Luckily I learned to look, to value you and to tell you / that I love you / and that it's worth it". Love, but halfway, only with half a heart.

Bárcenas, grateful, responded to the unconditional enthusiasm of the public with phrases like "what a marvel, friend, what energy!" and "Barcelona, how great you are!", and deploying constant communication. The concert went beyond an hour and a half and ended with the group waving and dancing on stage while (canned) played Torrente presidente, from Santiago Segura's film, and the dance remix of Vino y cemento. Pedralbes celebrated the scent of Taburete, a smell it recognized as its own.
