From David Bowie to 'Flying free': the recommendations of the In-Edit 2026
The festival screens seventy musical documentaries from October 29 to November 8 at the Mooby Aribau Cinema
BarcelonaTilda Swinton directing a search for Marianne Faithfull. Albert Serra filming an Ingrid Caven concert the way live music is no longer filmed. A journey to the end of the nights where Flying free was playing. Remei de Ca la Fresca standing up to the companies draining the Montseny aquifers. An intimate short film about Jordi Savall. Tour chronicles of Fermin Muguruza and Pulp. Three Norwegian witches reclaiming the mist of black metal. A flamenco taste from Carla Simón. These are just some of the things that will happen in the 24th edition of In-Edit, the music documentary film festival that will be held at Mooby Aribau Cinema from October 29 to November 8. In total, 70 documentaries will be screened, from which we have made a selection. This is the recommendation from ARA.
'Broken English'
In memory of Marianne Faithfull
In-Edit opens with a very special film: because it includes the last interview with Marianne Faithfull (1946-2025), because it is structured as a fiction in which the actress Tilda Swinton conducts an investigation into the British singer and because there are moments of extraordinary emotion, such as Beth Orton's performance of the song As tears go by, as well as contributions from Courtney Love, Warren Ellis, Thurston Moore and Ed Harcourt. Oh, and because Broken English (2025) was directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, responsible for another atypical documentary: 20,000 Days on Earth (2014), about Nick Cave. Broken English will be screened on October 29th at 7:30 pm and on November 5th at 6:30 pm.
'Hex'
Three witches for black metal
The Norwegian director of photography Maja Holand debuts as a director to explain the pact signed by three women to create a black metal band from scratch, Witch Club Satan, and to reclaim the legacy of pagan witches. Holand's way of filming, which stirs up expressionist colors and shadows, perfectly suits the music of three artists who had to face several contradictions when the group's success threatened the control they wanted to maintain over it. Hex, which is presented as a trial, is screened on November 1st at 4:45 PM and on November 3rd at 9:30 PM.
'Bowie: the final act'
Remembering the last stage of a myth
The creation of the testamentary album Blackstar (2016) is one of the focal points of this documentary about the final stage of David Bowie (1947-2016). It is directed by television filmmaker Jonathan Stiasny, who addresses highly emotional material without shying away from the debate over some of the Thin White Duke's artistic decisions. The screenings are on October 30th at 9 PM and November 8th at 4:30 PM.
'Sixteen moments of my life'
Ingrid Caven filmed by Albert Serra
A new prodigy from the filmmaker from Banyoles, this time in the service of the music of the German artist Ingrid Caven and the Molforts, the group formed by Ferran Font, Enric Juncà, Joe Robinson and Marc Verdaguer. Albert Serra filmed them while they were performing at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris in 2025. As spectators were able to verify when Seize moments de ma vie premiered at the Locarno Festival, Serra achieves what critic Eulàlia Iglesias describes as "a space of shared filmic introspection in which Caven unfolds sixteen musical themes inspired by her life, in a comforting sonic and luminous atmosphere in which her poignant verses about the traumatic experience of war, the bond with cinema or the terrible anxieties that appear in the most banal moments resonate with striking intensity". Seize moments de ma vie is screened on November 6 at 7 p.m. and November 8 at 9 p.m.
'The last critic'
A living tribute to Robert Christgau
Documentaries about musicians are the raison d'être of In-Edit, but from time to time the programming opens a window for... music critics! This year, the international competition section includes a documentary about the American Robert Christgau, surely one of the white critics who has done the most work to break down stereotypes. The last critic is screened on October 31st at 5:15 PM and on November 4th at 8:45 PM.
'Flying free: History of an anthem (Pont Aeri)'
Exactly what the title says
How is an anthem created? And an anthem that will spread through the wildest nightclubs and also via radio rotation? The people responsible were Marc Escudero, Rubén Moreno and Marian Dacal. The context, the màkina scene surrounding the nightlife empire Pont Aeri. The anthem in question, Flying free. The documentary about all of this is screened on November 6 at 9:05 p.m. and on November 7 at 9:25 p.m. In-Edit also programs a special project about another nightclub legend: Jordi Cubino, better known in the disco era of the 80s as David Lyme. Cubino, musical director of the program Eufòria, puts himself in the hands of Carlo Padial in El doble, an audiovisual artifact that aims to find him an alter ego. El doble is screened on November 1 at 9 p.m.
'23 Robadors'
Musical resistance in the heart of the Raval
This medium-length film praises the work of the club on Robadors Street, a refuge for jazz and flamenco in the heart of Barcelona's Raval district. Circumstances have meant that the premiere at In-Edit arrives a few weeks after the Venezuelan artist Arca, who lives in Barcelona, recommended it to Madonna: the Venezuelan artist Arca, who lives in Barcelona, recommended it to Madonna: "I know a very good flamenco place in Barcelona...". 23 Robadors will be screened on October 30th at 8:45 PM. Within the Sounds of Barcelona section, documentaries are also scheduled about the pianist Enrique E. Cofiner, about punk in Castelldefels, and about the Transition-era concerts by Raimon, Lluís Llach, and Quico Pi de la Serra.
'The fuck you heroes'
Pioneers of hardcore-punk, hip-hop or skate
The American Glen E. Friedman began by photographing the world of skateboard in the late seventies. And since one thing leads to another, he also immortalized the origins of hardcore punk and then the pioneers of hip-hop. In this documentary, he summons many of those photographed: Jello Biafra, Chuck D., Stacy Peralta, Zack de la Rocha, Henry Rollins, Tony Hawk... And with a soundtrack by Brendan Canty, the drummer of Fugazi. The screenings are on October 30th at 6 p.m. and November 3rd at 6:30 p.m.
'But before that there will be thirst'
Long live Remei de Ca la Fresca
Seeing and living a concert by Remei de Ca la Fresca is one of the most stimulating things in current Catalan music. Furthermore, the group from Arbúcies maintains a fight against extractive practices in the Montseny aquifers. Both aspects are inseparable for Remei de Ca la Fresca, as is evident in the documentary that is being screened on November 1st at 4:30 PM and on November 8th at 5:15 PM.
'The Magic City: Birmingham according to Sun Ra'
Journey to the origins of the jazz alien
Sun Ra (1914-1993) was one of the most unique and charismatic figures in jazz. To understand where such a striking personality emerged from, Guillaume Maupin and Pablo Guarise travel to Birmingham, in the American state of Alabama, to understand how that social and political context determined the life and work of Sun Ra. The screenings are on November 1st at 9:30 PM and November 8th at 8:40 PM.
