BarcelonaFive new suspects have been arrested in connection with the investigation into the Louvre jewelry heist, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced Thursday in an interview on RTL radio. Beccuau specified that the arrests took place in Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis, and that despite searches, the loot, valued at 88 million euros, has not yet been recovered.

The news comes after, on Saturday night, French judicial police arrested two men whom he considered suspects in the robbery. According to the Prosecutor's Office, at least one of the men was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Algeria.

The prosecutor has been cautious in describing those arrested. She only revealed that investigators, in their inquiries, found traces of DNA that led to one of the arrests and linked the detainee to the robbery. The other individuals in police custody are people "who can provide information about how the events unfolded," the prosecutor stated. She explained that the two men arrested on Saturday partially confessed to the crime. In statements to RTL, Beccuau detailed that their pretrial detention lasted almost 96 hours, and that they initially denied any involvement in the robbery. "After questioning, they admitted to participating in the robbery," the prosecutor asserted. According to Beccuau, the confessions of both men have not yielded much information, and so far, investigators are relying primarily on the evidence they have gathered. One of the suspects admitted to being present at the scene of the robbery, although he did not specify whether he was in the Apolo Gallery, where the thieves carried out a swift raid and stole the jewelry. The prosecutor clarified that the new arrests are not related to the statements of the first two defendants, and emphasized that, based on their records, they are not part of the organized crime elite.
