Leapmotor B05, the Chinese threat to European hegemony, passes through Zaragoza

The C segment, corresponding to compact cars like the Golf, the León, the Astra or the 308, among others, has historically been the one that has accumulated the most sales in Europe. Until now, it has been a market segment reserved for the major European manufacturers, but the advance of electrification and new vehicles from China are challenging European hegemony in this segment.Leapmotor is a Chinese manufacturer that has a strategic alliance with the Stellantis group, the parent company of many French, Italian, and North American brands. In fact, the Stellantis group and Leapmotor signed an agreement in 2023 for joint venture to form a company with 51% of the capital reserved for Stellantis and the remaining 49% for Leapmotor to manufacture and sell models of the Chinese brand outside the Asian giant's market. This has allowed some historic factories of the Stellantis group, such as the one in Figueruelas in Zaragoza, to be remodeled to manufacture vehicles from the Chinese brand. The roadmap agreed by Leapmotor and Stellantis at the Aragonese plant involves manufacturing an urban electric SUV called B-10 and a C-segment SUV under the Opel brand that will take advantage of the Chinese brand's platform and technology, and which would be added to the current Lancia Ypsilon and Peugeot 208.Leapmotor B05, an electric car with many arguments

The new B05 is a vehicle that on paper should fit perfectly with the habits, customs, and preferences of European buyers. This Chinese electric car will have a starting price of 26,100 euros, which with institutional aid and current promotional discounts would allow the final price of the product to be below 20,000 euros, a very attractive psychological barrier for buyers on the Old Continent.

Aesthetically, the Leapmotor B05 catches the eye with a modern and recognizable design, very much to the taste of European buyers. In fact, it is not uncommon to see some similarities with the Volkswagen Golf, the Opel Astra, or the Peugeot 308, the great European benchmarks of the moment. At 4.43 meters long and with an aerodynamic body that allows for an aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.26, the Leapmotor B05 aims to be the spearhead of the Chinese brand's offensive in Europe. And it is that the refinement of the model with the objective of conquering the European public goes beyond aesthetics, since Alfa Romeo engineers have fine-tuned the model from a dynamic point of view on the Italian track of Balocco to make the B05 a very dynamic and agile compact, thanks to the design of the suspension geometries and the reformulation of the steering. The result promises to be a vehicle much closer to what Europeans value in compacts of the segment, in order to win over buyers skeptical of Chinese brands.

The third major argument of the new Leapmotor B05 is mechanical, as it offers two versions with the same power (218 HP and 240 Nm of torque) but with batteries of 56.2 kWh and 401 kilometers of autonomy or 67.1 kWh of capacity and 482 kilometers of autonomy. In any case, the B05 promises acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 170 km/h. In addition, it is compatible with fast charging systems with power up to 168 kW, and can recover from 30% to 80% of the battery charge in just 17 minutes. If all these arguments are not yet convincing enough, the Leapmotor B05 wants to play a final card highly valued in Europe, namely technological and digital equipment. This electric model features a fully digital dashboard presided over by an 8.8-inch instrument cluster and a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen that allows you to manage all the vehicle's devices and applications. It also includes a 360-degree camera system to assist with parking and maneuvering, seven airbags in the cabin, and an arsenal of 21 ADAS driving assistants.A very ambitious brand

Thanks to the alliance with the Stellantis group, Leapmotor has grown a lot in recent years in Europe, and the B05 aims to be the model that consolidates the implementation of the Chinese brand on the Old Continent. Leapmotor has gone from selling 300,000 units in Europe in 2024 to selling more than 600,000 in 2025, and expects to far exceed one million units sold in Europe in 2026. In this regard, models like the A10 or the T03 –the cheapest electric car on the market– have been solid bets to increase Leapmotor's sales volume.Unlike the rest of the Chinese manufacturers, Leapmotor has understood that to win the majority favor of European customers, it is necessary to manufacture vehicles designed to adapt to the tastes and needs of Europeans, and not to send to the Old Continent models that sell well in China, conceived in a local key, to export surplus production. To put it another way, Leapmotor has decided to manufacture electric vehicles in Europe and for Europeans, as in the case of this electric compact, while the rest of the Chinese manufacturers are still limited to sending production surpluses of the larger SUVs and sedans that Chinese buyers like so much. However, only time will tell which of the two approaches will be more successful in Europe.
