Antoni Bassas's analysis

Zapatero and Sánchez are being shown the path to prison

Feijóo told Sánchez that he will soon be indicted. And the spokesperson for the PP in Congress said that there will be people who will start singing. No, this does not look like a change of government, but rather a change in the Spanish party system, in which a government with a Podemos minister or with presidents who negotiate with Catalan and Basque independentists will no longer be possible.

There are days when a new situation is foreseen, in which even a change of era is sensed. And, from our point of view, this is what happened yesterday in Madrid.  The debate in Congress on Sánchez's explanations went as one might imagine: Sánchez defending himself against the PP with the "you too!" (because, of course, the PP can write encyclopedias about corruption), accusing the justice system of bias and therefore, of lawfare, making a somewhat forced turn, presenting the PSOE as a victim of the corruption of Ábalos and Cerdán, and reducing the crimes to a specific handful of delinquents. And Feijóo saying all sorts of things to him. And Rufián asking for a government plan. And Junts made an unexpected proposal, this one, to tell Sánchez: “we will invest a new socialist president and we will hold elections when the time comes, next year” (a proposal that Sánchez got rid of by inviting Junts to vote for a motion of no confidence from Feijóo, which Junts will not do). This would be an account adjusted to the facts of what we heard yesterday. But there was more, much more. Because, you know what? Feijóo told Sánchez that he will be indicted very soon. And the PP spokesperson in Congress said that there will be people who will start singing, like the corrupter Aldama, who will not go to prison and has saved three million euros in commissions that he will not have to return. In other words, the PP knows what the judges are preparing and what reports the Police and the Civil Guard are preparing. And in the afternoon, Begoña Gómez, Sánchez's wife, had to personally go and hand over her passport to the judge, and Zapatero's entire agenda was leaked.

Our analysis is that this is already a textbook "everyone to jail." In other words, it is no longer about the typical alternation of power, in which a party falls due to corruption and returns to govern a few years later, with another leader, after having paid the penance of living in opposition for a few years. No, this does not look like a change of government, but a change of the Spanish party system, in which a government with a Podemos minister or presidents who pact with Catalan and Basque independentists will no longer be possible. A change of party system with an even more obedient PSOE, more like Felipe González wanted it, and even more Spanish nationalist, disguised as Constitutional, more warlike and less social. Think for a moment: they have convicted the State Prosecutor General, they are prosecuting a former president, they have asked for the president's wife's passport. Because can't we see Zapatero, or Sánchez, or both, as we saw Maduro? Today it may seem like science fiction. But how many things that seemed so have not ended up happening? Listen to the reflection of the Bildu spokesperson, Mertxe Aizpurua:

“It is not a conspiracy theory. It is a State with anti-democratic foundations rebelling against a democratic impulse. That is why we affirm that this goes far beyond his government or his term. Mr. Sánchez, we are not saying this as an attack, we are conveying this reading so that you are aware of what is on the table and act accordingly. So that you stop resisting and go on the offensive. Because they will not stop, Mr. Sánchez. They will not stop. Or do you think they will not dare to indict you? We Basques have seen it all. We know very well how the police and judicial powers act in this State. In Euskal Herria, a large-scale state operation was launched to try to neutralize Basque separatism. In Euskal Herria, social or youth organizations were outlawed based on police indications, without any proof, which years later, after torture and the corresponding years of prison, ended in acquittals. But it was already done”.

Crystal clear. If we connect the dots, this leads us to a new stage in Spanish political life in which we would go from the far-right to the center-right or at most to the center disguised as socialist. Declared enemies of Catalonia as a nation. It is a serious moment.

Good morning.
